To be honest, I only want to wear ONE mask if out in public or traveling. Not forever, either.

I want cases to start crashing like they are in Israel which has a highly-effective vaccination program.

I want public health to be the center of attention. I want anyone who tries to stop vaccination clinics arrested and jailed.

Chickens: NPIP is “voluntary,” but hey, ya can’t sell birds outta state without NPIP. That’s why the big hatcheries are NPIP and don’t bring new birds in all the time. Thus, hatcheries breed their own... admittedly mostly selecting for egg-laying rather than breed standards.

The reason that NPIP started was back in the 1930s...regarding bacillary white diarrhea that killed huge numbers of chicks.

California just had a big Newcastle quarantine. Really bad for chicken ppl.

I am probably a lot less strict than this with my chickens.

I hate bureaucracy, too, but I also want any anti-vaxxer who blocks a vaccination site arrested and in jail.

Not clear about what you're saying here. I was IN the vND quarantine area. The virus was really bad. The quarantine probably shortened the rampage of the virus dramatically and saved most of our chickens. And just like the current crop of Covid anti-vaxxers we had the (aptly named) SOB group who did their very best to thwart the USDA and CDFA efforts to contain and eliminate that virus. ...and make the whole operation more expensive for federal and state taxpayers. Ignorant didn't go away then and it's not going to go away with Covid either.

Re mask mandates: Here is a pattern to make your own. It takes a max of 20 minutes to make a mask. Make a few and you get faster. You can make them with as many layers as you like from whatever material makes you feel secure. I use 2 layers of closely woven quilting cottons and a soft lining of cotton flannel. You can choose a size that fits your face confortably and securely. There's an option to include a pocket for additional filtering material such as the non-woven stuff surgical masks are constructed from. As for shaping over the nose, I use 8" pipe cleaner folded in half and carefully zigzagged into the top seam allowance before I turn the mask right side out.

i am trying to say that you and the others in the Newcastle area are or were right.....

Vis-a-vis dem crazy antivaxx protesters....

I hope Disney Security and Dodger Stadium security are briefed about the anti-vaxxer movement and domestic terrorism.....

Perhaps "tyranny" was the wrong word. However, enforcing a policy of wearing four masks at once is not okay.
Take what you said:

Four masks. That's four times as many masks being purchased. Four times as much money. And with so many being bought, they'll become scarcer and scarcer, and their price will rise, resulting in more profit.
Maybe I'm just cynical, but the idea of making people wear more masks just sounds like an idea to make more money. Maybe it isn't tyranny, but it still isn't right.

And nobody anywhere ever is suggesting that four masks be mandated. Not to mention - we've got the vaccine rolling in. Mask mandates will be out once the virus in otherwise under control... Just like they were in 1918.

Find me a politician mandating it
Find me a large scientific body suggesting four masks, not a single individual doctor.

It's just not happening. This is why I don't listen to ANYTHING said by one rando doctor whose specialty isn't epidemiology that the news thinks is worth reporting on.

Even the article itself says multiple bodies of work suggest wearing that many masks is dangerous and not suggested. None of the leading epidemiologists are suggesting wearing four masks. Multi-layered masks have been suggested for a really long time. Many people are already wearing them. The suggestion is simple, obvious even - wear a mask that works better or layer them if you don't. Theoretically you could even pin an extra fabric layer to an existing mask. It could come from anywhere.
The problem lies in many people wearing the lightest fabric they possibly can with a low filterability. Some people are still wearing neck gaiters despite it being shown to be worse than not having a mask. People don't willingly seek out the best research on the market and they fight it every step of the way even when it comes to saving lives. Even the most well meaning person may just follow whatever is suggested but also easiest without thinking about the consequences.

You can be cynical, I'm cynical, but there's obvious explanations for the new suggestion. Occams Razor is reliable for a reason.

I've started making the same mask.
Super easy to make, no seams down the front, plenty of room to talk without it rubbing your face, and a good tight fit. And like you... I sew in a pipe cleaner across the top for a molded fit, though I catch mine after I turn the mask right side out and am putting in the top stitching around the edges . Very helpful for those who wear glasses.

I did just get those little metal nosebands in the mail the other day and plan to give them a try. I'll stitch them in instead of just sticking them on with the sticky strips.

Hey everybody! :frow
I'm still reading along when I can, just been busy lately and not had the time to post much.
Wishing everyone well.

A good friend of mine passed away from cancer on the 30th. I just found out last night. He was one of the last people I saw outside my very-closest friends before lockdown hit in March. His lovely wife is holding off on his memorial until the summer because she doesn't wanna risk anyone getting sick - the hope is by then most people will be vaccinated and case counts will be down.

I knew this man from about 9 years old. He liked D&D and gave dice away at his wedding as wedding favors. I still have mine. He liked to illuminate medieval style manuscripts and we painted D&D miniatures together in March.

Pretty heartbroken right now.

A small town like Gilroy has 6.5K cases? Holy moly! How big is your hospital?

The good news is we're supposed to be through the Christmas/New Year surge and the number of infections is actually dropping in CA now.

Have you got a vaccination program going?
Seriously scary here. 6.5k cases in a population of ~60k. Our local hospital is St. Louise Regional Hospital, and I think it normally has 93 beds.
