Coronavirus, Covid 19 Discussion and How It Has Affected Your Daily Life Chat Thread

The NYT is celebrating how much progress is being made on the Covid front. Vaccinations are way up. Cases and hospitalizations are dropping dramatically. It looks like -- this is speculative at this point -- immunity in the general population -- at least to the original virus -- is growing. They posit that the number of deaths will follow the trend in about 3 weeks.

On a related topic, there are trials of a new drug that treats obesity -- a major factor in diabetes as well as the most serious cases and mortalities from Covid. People in the study are losing 15%-20% of their body mass.

Color me happy!

The thing is, it's very expensive -- about $1K/month -- and the effects reverse when people stop taking it. But, who knows, over time it may point in the direction of a solution to the growing problem of diabetes and lifelong social stigmas for people who struggle with weight. And the benefits of that would outlive Covid by a factor of about infinity.

If you wanted to know how Covid was moving through the population that would be a valid way to count. If you wanted to know what it's actual lethality is that's going to introduce errors.

But wasn't the point learning about a virus which was entirely new to the human population? In that case it seems reasonable to me to gather as much data as possible and fully analyze it once the emergency was over.

Are we still in an emergency situation? Were we ever all in an emergency situation? Often in life that wisdom comes in retrospect.

Great that his job is on top of the most recent guidelines. NPR reported yesterday that the CDC is advising people double mask: https://www.npr.org/sections/corona...g-for-more-protection-against-the-coronavirus

It is probably overkill, but I usually wear a super tight fitting Halyard N95 mask with a two layer cloth mask I made that has a filter pocket for dried, unscented wipes and sometimes a plastic face shield over all that. So most of the time when I go out, it's 4-5 layers. It's not a super pleasant experience (haven't had a good hair day since early 2020 lol) and possibly overkill, but I live in CA and am the sole employed person in the house, so will do whatever it takes to not transmit this virus to others and also not contract it.
