I don't believe they are playing it down. Fact. At least 350 people are still dieing ..a day..with Covid in this country alone. How many are dieing with the common cold..a day? They are worried about the vulnerable getting. This virus has no rhyme or reason. No one can explain who it will hit hard, and why .. except that they see the elderly and those with immune problems tend to get it more often, and worse. Then there are those who seem perfectly healthy that end up in the hospital or die. I know the vaccines work. I've got a large family. Those that haven't had the vaccine get it bad. Those that have had a vaccine don't get it, or only get mild symptoms. I've had two boosters now. I'm elderly. Not taking any chances. To each his own in how they believe. I just go by facts within my family and friends. Hope it's ok with you..agree to disagree. 💞
A retired pastor in our church is real sick with it right now. I don't think he's vaccinated. He's elderly but I don't know how old really. If I had to guess I'd say late 70's. He's been to the ER 3x in the last 12 weeks, I think. Can't eat; extreme nausea, some vomiting. No diarrhea, some cough. Just no appetite. His daughter beside herself because he won't eat, won't drink, but so far his blood work comes back normal so they won't admit him. They just hydrate him with IV fluids and send him home. He's in pretty good health otherwise. Covid isn't done with us yet.

70,000 of 331,000 is just over 20%.
So, nearly 80% are vaccinated.
Yet, the deaths from covid are higher this year than last year (comparing the end of July to allow time for reporting) according to the World Health Organization.

Our world in data website has more categories of information than WHO.

Portugal has 95% of the population vaccinated; sharing the highest rate in the world with Cuba. And deaths from covid are nearly as high this year as last year for the same week as above.

I guess that vaccine just doesn’t work on this new variant. Heard they have a new vaccine in the works.

Unless you or a loved one are one of the 300.
As I said...in the grand scheme. It's not to lessen or devalue anyone's personal loss. I just had a woman today I had to design an obituary card for. The girl died at age 21. I didn't ask why because the poor woman could barely hold back her tears. All I know is is that she was attending college and tragically died. To someone sitting behind their desk determining the fate of the world, what are 300 lives in comparison to 30 million? To a doctor that contemplates what is causing your illness is 1 in 300 rare or 1 in 25? It's all become a dangerous numbers game and we're all suffering because of it.

I don't want anyone to misread me and I want to be absolutely clear on this: to anyone that has lost anyone due to this virus I, myself, am truly sorry for your loss and I hope this community can help you cope. :hugs

I am. Gosh, I don’t know what I am other than stunned. My favorite adult member of my husband’s family passed last night at home. The details are not clear, but she was just home from the hospital a day or so. It’s just… shocking all things considered. She was 70, but a young 70. Am I allowed to ramble in this thread? I hope so.
She was the healthiest of the family. Honestly, both sides of my husband’s, and her husband’s family. I am wife number three, but I was the only one she could stand. She just… gosh, I can’t believe she’s gone. I can’t believe Covid got her. I know you guys are keeping up with the statistics, but I wasn’t. I just wasn’t expecting this. :duc
