It's good practice to wash all edible produce to be eaten raw.We lived on Okinawa years ago, and it was necessary to rinse all produce we planned to eat uncooked (like lettuce) in a dish of bleach water. It all came out tasting like greens with bleach.This was because of growing conditions, and water rationing, which made ALL the water contaminated.
There's no way I will buy or eat any leafy produce now that's not going to be cooked, and the bleach water rinse to make it safer doesn't appeal either.
