So with every man and his dog buying up all the available local chicks in response to the virus scare, I went out and bought an incubator. I haven’t seen my roo doing his business much though, do you guys think these are fertile?

It gets worse. Technically it's supposed to be based on your projected 2020 filings so if you earn more money in 2020 than projected you have to return some or all of it.
 whatever that means... I'm still guestimating what my MAGI is for 2019.
2020 so far have only gotten TWO 1- DAY assignments.... If im forced to sell out everything i own to survive the year though, i might make more than i did in 2018. Either way though, unless i win the lottery or something, am still not likely to be above poverty level.

On the bright side, have maintained preparedness for years (bills aside). Today was swap out the food in the cooker with some from the freezer again day.

Most of that food only cost time and fuel and electricity.

I don't really understand how the health care system works in the USA.
Here in Europe and in the UK it's primarily a state system. The problem here is the state hasn't invest enough in the system and in certain countries, encouraged private concerns.
We, the voters, can't do much about disease. It's natural and it happens and has been happening throughput history. What we can do is try to ensure our health care systems are capable of responding to epidemics and as our populations life expectancy increases, take this into account in our health care provision.
Apparently there isn't a shortage of money. What there is is a shortage of commitment.
My hope is, although I believe it is a hope in vain, is that we will learn from this epidemic and invest in health care.
My view is still that the total lock downs being seen in many countries is not the right policy.
Better to isolate the most vulnerable to this virus and let those least likely to suffer from serious illness from the virus go to work. Many millions are likely to contract the virus but it is a life threatening disease to a comparatively small section of the population. These are the people we need to protect and from past experience and current medical knowledge we know who is in the high risk category.
There are lots of harrowing stories in the media already. There will no doubt be many more.
But, if one reads the statistics and the scientific evidence gathered so far, we are not all going to die from Covid-19.
China has a population of roughly 3.4 billion people out of which three thousand two hundred and eighty seven have died to date from Covid-19. This is a very small number relative to the population.
This is the current data.

IMO: Its just not possible to isolate the most vulnerable and old people. Who takes care of them?

And if the medical care is not functioning very good a lot of young people will get very sick too (and will need oxygen or ICU too to survive). Just like the 16 year old boy. Who had Corona but medics thought he had a severe cold. If you let the younger people get in contact with each other we really get into trouble. There will be a shortage of testing materials, medics, hospital care and beds. Much more will die as needed.

Yes. One of the threads you guys pointed me too covered this. The white spot towards the middle (more matte spot..not the reflection spots) means it's fertile and that's where the chick will start developing.

(see guys, I read everything y'all told me to!)

Ok, I have a confession...my "friend" who was thinking of getting an incubator and wanted suggestions for regular breeds to raise for meats was actually me. *blush*
Though I'm sure you all already knew that. 🤪

So the incubator is on the way and I think I'll start with my Australorp roo and use him to cover the Aust hen and some of my Sapphire Gem hens. But now that I know TSC has chicks I'm feeling really torn. Should I look at them or not?

Mine is a smaller store and it doesn't get a huge variety in. Typical sex links, several heritages like BR, Australorp, Rocks, RIR, etc.... meat mixes and ducklings. I'm thinking of grabbing some meaties if there are any but already know I'd have to go back again for their special feed. Where as I know typical birds or my mixes could make better use of forages and working for their food, thus less feed, thus less trips for feed.
The feed order I'm getting tomorrow does include starter in case I have successful hatches with the incubator, but not enough to raise many meat birds on.

Other than ordering a JG, SS, or Brahma type I'm not sure I'll get more in terms of size over my Australorp roo. Who is now a year old and still well behaved.
He's actually been in a separate small pen with the Aust hen because there were hen fighting issues with the Sapphires. The Aust hen was a huge bully so I took her out and tossed him in to keep her company.
However I'm getting a little impressed (without getting my hopes up too high) with how well he's caring for and treating her. She doesn't have a bare back, her head feathers are fine, and he completely dotes on her.

Thoughts?
^^^ I think this got lost in some of the political posts today so bumping up....

Think my Australorp roo is enough for raising sustainable meat birds?
Get chicks depending on what they have?
I need to decide by 7:30am, before I go get my feed.

:)I don't want to drag the thread any further away from the general discussion and get involved in a lot of politics and ethics. I have a rather different view of the current situation and it would only lead to a flame war.
