It depends on who you believe.
The sad thing from my perspective is the virus isn't what is going to be responsible for the death count. What is doing the damage is the epidemics mismanagement. by our politicians.
It can be managed as other countries have shown, Singapore, Cuba, South Korea, Sweden, Germany to cite a few. The gross stupidity in the UK for example is killing people.
There is no doubt that Covid-19 has the potential to kill Millions if our politicians don't pour funds into health services. So far many seem more concerned about looking after corporate business and worrying about getting reelected.

Thank you for your rational response. I suppose only time will really tell whether Covid-19 ends up being worse than other epidemics in terms of numbers of deaths, and there will be plenty of blame to go around after all is said and done.

Oh yeah, definitely perspective! I’m sorry, I wasn’t trying to imply that WWII wasn’t scary or anything!!! I’m sure it was for many, many people, like your family, and I know many lost their lives and everything but I’m just going off of what my Nana said. I don’t necessarily agree. And of course it is perspective too like you said. She is from the US so probably less scary here than in Europe.

Yes we did think we could be in this situation, we even used to have a pandemic response office in the white house. The truth is we knew in December and did nothing until March. 3 months of denial and sitting our hands is costing lives. Now could cost lives, is costing lives.

Do we really want to do this, I love BYC to get away from politics. Love BYC. We could argue/debate the political aspects of the situation all night long, no one wins.
If you want I can post links, video, of many politicians and news media down playing this in January, February, end of February , if you want I can post links to liberal news calling it China flu and Wu-han flu, if you want I can post vids of a certain politician who I will not name .. encouraging public gatherings end of February, she also called for a bill on the house floor to ban our President from banning travel from infected countries.
Or we can just love each other and work together to beat this, Our choice.

Personally, and maybe it's just me, I'd love to know which news networks actually refer to it as that so I can avoid the heck out of them. Or even write them to tell them how messed up it is.

I definitely saw a lot of downplaying it and pandering to the economy. Anyone who does that is complicit. Anyone.

We are all upset, but this is not a forum on politics, fortunately. I want to vent too, and need to get back to calm and moving forward.
Family birthdays this month, one tomorrow, and no celebrations planned. It makes me very sad, but that's where we are this year. How do you wish a three year old 'Happy Birthday!' on the telephone? We'll manage, and hope next year will be better.

The Kid's school is officially out till the end of April now, but probably won't assemble again this school year. They've got him doing some class work on his Chromebook, but it only takes him about half an hour, it's not like a whole school day. I don't know if or when I will feel safe assuming regular life again. Maybe if they get a vaccine. If I could get a vaccine and felt like I was protected and couldn't catch the virus, I might go out and about again someday. Otherwise, being a hermit and/or wearing a mask just might be my new normal.

I watch CBS and I have never heard them use any of those disgusting ethnic terms for COVID-19. You can watch them, they are safe.

Thanks, I mostly stay away from mainstream news sources anyhow. I try to also go to the original reports whenever possible. "Oh! A cure for the virus!" Sources? Turns out it's like a 10% reduction in symptoms or something. "Death toll is!!!" Well, did that come from the CDC? Do the CDCs numbers include non-virus people who aren't getting care because of the virus? "So and so said..." When? Who reported that? What was the context? "This happened because of this person having this motivation." Did it? Is that what that person said or is that what someone else said that person said.

When I do seek out news I pick ones I trust to give me headline-level short facts or a balanced report. I do more digging on my own.

Why? I listen to read them all. We are best informed if we don't put us in a box and only get one side. If you need to know it was Vox news.
