Actually yes, we have imagined this exact thing happening. There even was a office of pandemic response in the white house until 2018 . The scientific community has been warning us for years. I keep hearing that, how could we have known? when the obvious question is could we have not known? I remember when we were worried about the bird flu and the scientist were saying that once it goes from animal to human things will get bad fast and that was 14 years ago. My concern now is people are still not taking it seriously, the Gov of Florida just exempted church services from the stay at home order that was way too late in implementation to begin with.

As of 2017 there were over 3000 epidemiologists in the US alone.
There is a sector of the US government that studies, plans, and run exercises related just to epidemics for the very reason of PLANNING and policy setting.
Some administrations utilize and keep these positions well staffed and others...not so much.

This does not include the scientists all over the world who devote their entire life to the study of zoonotic diseases in the hopes of understanding and preventing this very thing- a coronaviruse causing devastation around the world.

There are indeed plenty of experts who have been studying and warning of this type of thing for years.

Which means monogamous married gay men with clean tests still can't give blood, but people who sleep around but haven't gotten to hook up in a while because of the virus can. The irony.

WA state has extended shelter-in-place until early May.

Hubby's company has also extended their work from home policy through the end of April, regardless of state or country (so even employees living in areas not under a shelter order can continue working from home without loss of pay or position).
