I think that study was geared to more of a natural disaster where people could be without power for quite sometime. In September 2017 we had hurricane Irma. We were without power for a week. Luckily my sister had not lost power and we borrowed her generator. The generator wasn't large enough to run everything so we had to time share it. I put blankets in the freezer to help keep stuff frozen when we had to move the power to run the well or other things. We survived. This is how I gave the chickens water. Luckily the coops are lower so I relied on gravity. All of the coops have auto waterers. It worked. When the well was on it would back fill this trashcan with water. It actually lasted quite awhile before we had to add water.

Good idea!

At my other farm we were without power for 9 days after the remnants of a hurricane blew through. Luckily there was a natural spring a few miles away so everyday I took my truck there to fill up containers in the back so I could keep my livestock (about 120 ish at the time) watered. It was so bad local fire trucks had to deliver water to people and farms in need. I never forgot that.

Luckily on this farm we are just close enough to a small city to have pressure driven water, even during power outages, and if somehow that fails I have a natural spring on my property. Plus there are oodles of creeks everywhere.

I may have the most awful red clay to deal with now but water is no longer a worry. We'll be orange.... but we'll be well hydrated. :D

I just read an article about the TP issue that makes sense, the paper company Georgia Pacific estimates that when a family stays home they use 40% more TP because they are not using it at work or in public. With kids home from school, people home from work we are using more. The supply chain needs to adjust. That does not mean there are not selfish hoarders, but maybe not as many as some think.
You're not still worrying about toilet paper are you? :p:lol:

Huh?
Are you and yours ok??

**worried by the wording above**

We're good here so far. I was referring to the status of the thread. :lau We come close to crossing the line, but most appear to be rational. Of course there are several on 'ignore' option. :p Numbers in NY this morning show the highest mortality so far. :(

So in January, which is what I asked about, it was called COVID19? Are you sure about that? You might wanna check again.

I spoke with G about this tonight and he got super mad. Last week he had to call the cops to have someone removed from his store for trying to assault some rando asian guy that was shopping. I know when the initial restrictions on gatherings went into place he had to write up *two* employees for complaining about the management allowing asians in the store. Full on "I can't believe management is still letting 'Those People' shop in the store!" level racist. He said it's about every three shifts right now he has to de-escalate a situation between a really ignorant customer and some random asian person that's usually not even Chinese because some Karen felt the need to blame every single asian in the world for a virus that's in almost every nation. That means this is a day to day experience in his store.

So. How do we best go about protecting those asian people now? Not to mention people like G who have to de-escalate that violence. And what sort of language will just reinforce that level of ignorance?

Cause thinking about how to protect people who aren't white matters too. Which is why I listen close when people use language like that and why. Especially when they're supposed to be keeping ALL of us safe, not just some of us.
No, it eventually became covid-19, before that it was the other names.

I don't know about those racist the store owner is having to deal with, it's plain outright ignorance, what those people are doing/saying is wrong. Most people with common sense know & understand that calling it Wuhan Coronavirus is indicating its origin, but obviously common sense isn't in abundance especially at the store you're talking about. Are these skinheads or white supremacists talking trash about asians or just idiots? I have no patience for idiots or racists!

Do we really want to do this, I love BYC to get away from politics. Love BYC. We could argue/debate the political aspects of the situation all night long, no one wins.

Apparently it's pressing need for a significant number of people here.

We've discussed games and technical issues in connecting to them, gardening, the misery of cleaning up a stolen truck, yak culture and the differences between exotic bovines, history, various kinds of silliness and I'm sure other things I've forgotten. All of them relate to Covid and how people are coping. I don't see that how national leadership responds or fails to respond to the needs of the sick, the vulnerable and, basically, American citizens is any less relevant.

Family birthdays this month, one tomorrow, and no celebrations planned. It makes me very sad, but that's where we are this year. How do you wish a three year old 'Happy Birthday!' on the telephone? We'll manage, and hope next year will be better.

We have cancelled Easter at our house and this morning as I was getting ready to make breakfast I reflected on that and wondered who will be at our Thanksgiving table and if the same people would be there for Christmas.
