We have cancelled Easter at our house and this morning as I was getting ready to make breakfast I reflected on that and wondered who will be at our Thanksgiving table and if the same people would be there for Christmas.
That's the seriousness of it though, huh? My M&D & M&FIL have heart disease & FIL has non-insulin dependent diabetes & my M is oxygen dependent... they're all in their 70's. Worries us!!!

I watch CBS and I have never heard them use any of those disgusting ethnic terms for COVID-19. You can watch them, they are safe.

No. It's the exclusive provenance of right wing media: Fox, Limbaugh, Newsmax, Instapundit, etc. There are thinking conservatives like most of National Review who skip it. But you won't see it in serious journalism

We have cancelled son's birthday, Easter (one of the two days the Princess likes the entire family gathering), trip to Ca. for grandson's graduation- next to go will be my birthday trip to Chincoteague, and most likely our August trip to Germany. I tend to project way too much, but still have Thanksgiving and Christmas on the back burner. We do what we have to do. :idunno

Some of us here are in our 70s and usually a number of the risk factors just go with living that long.

No, it eventually became covid-19, before that it was the other names.

I don't know about those racist the store owner is having to deal with, it's plain outright ignorance, what those people are doing/saying is wrong. Most people with common sense know & understand that calling it Wuhan Coronavirus is indicating its origin, but obviously common sense isn't in abundance especially at the store you're talking about. Are these skinheads or white supremacists talking trash about asians or just idiots? I have no patience for idiots or racists!
Right. So once it had an official name many places immediately switched to that. Other sources didn't. That's messed up.

Nope. Normal people. Every day men and women, usually in their 50s and 60s. Usually white, occasionally black or Hispanic. Sometimes younger.

When swine flu went around people also stopped buying pork and discriminating against pork farmers. Pork farms crashed massively and pork industry groups issued letters asking news groups to stop calling it swine flu. In so.e countries they literally killed every single pig in major swine farm in the whole nation.
Of course, the impact was less in the USA but very much still felt to the point that pig farmers were threatening lawsuits over the name. And it is challenging/impractical but theoretically you could stop being a pig farmer or say you don't work with pigs. You can never "stop" being asian or say you aren't asian.

So this is a pretty common thing. Very human nature (unfortunately). It happened in 1918 with the "Spanish flu" too. We have seen it happen many times before and have a lot of historical documentation about how names effect common perception and why choosing our words carefully matters so much.

Not to mention, we don't even think to colloquially name viruses after the usa. Swine flu started in the usa and nobody called it the "American Virus". It is largely minorities that are effected when diseases get associated with groups of people.

We were still unprepared. If this had happened during any other administration the results would have been the same. Not enough masks, ventilators, etc. So politics doesn't matter, the mess we're in and what we're going to do prevent it again does.

But another -- ANY other -- administration would have seen it's responsibility to respond. They would have issued the DPA orders to get supplies manufactured and delivered. They would have gotten them to hotspots without calling governors "snakes" and they wouldn't have doled them out based on who is a political ally. They would have distributed them directly and not through for-profit third parties. They would not have allowed the situation where individual desperate governors were out bidding one another. They would have come to the assistance of an aircraft carrier with sick sailors forced to be in close proximity instead of firing the captain of the ship who appealed for help. They would have alerted the population to safe practices and not told them it would "magically" go away in 2 weeks exacerbating the attitude that it was nothing.

This administration is responsible for the callous and neglectful responses they've broadcast.
