Coronavirus, Covid 19 Discussion and How It Has Affected Your Daily Life Chat Thread

No 'apex' in sight here in NJ. A tiger in the Bronx zoo has tested positive for Covid 19 and others are apparently ill. If this virus has mutated to the point that it affects multi species we are screwed. Beware the coughing squirrel.

It already has, humans are not the first animals to contract the virus. This changes nothing.

Not overly concerned about social distancing with tigers tbh.
Apparently many animals carry versions of corona virus. It's a funny thing about science. Once it's decided to look for something, sure enough it turns up. Mostly it's been there all the time but we haven't looked before. A bit like the current virus.

This! Exactly!

And to add some humor, which will likely turn into reality because people are idiots...

I'll stick with normal masks, no thanks on home made or other concoctions. Don't get me wrong, I realize something might be better than nothing, but realistically those cloth masks aren't doing much.

Testing things is a great way to see how well they work!

I get it. I have always understood that they are NOT PERFECT.
Particle masks are hot and difficult to breathe through and NOT N95 so I can only imagine how uncomfortable an N95 is.

Homemade are supposed to be ADDED to social distancing, staying the heck home and not as a replacement for for those.

Are they THE best answer....probably not. Are they still better than NOTHING (which is what is available in premade properly rated) I DO believe so.

What they are made of is important.

I do like that his test is something many can try at home to see if their homemade masks are helpful.
One other thought......most people do not constantly expel or inhale air at that velocity. Walking through someone elses sneeze cloud won't be at that velocity either.

I am not sure what language that is. Maybe a fellow BYCer will speak it and translate! :)

Judging by the straps on those last masks and the workmanship, they are all surgical masks. The first bunch look handmade.

Came across the video and thought it was excellent for a lot of reasons. Thought it was a little suspicious they are telling people to wear scarves, tshirts, anything, but the fact remains those will not block much. I have a few dust masks (one is n95) for cutting wood indoors, I can barely breathe wearing those things, that's how tight the mesh/filter is.
Yeah, I figured the first ones were just single layers of thin fabrics. I've been making mine with 2 to 3 layers of quilting fabric, with a pocket for a dense material insert too. Not sure how easy it will be to breathe through something as thick as a quilt though....

But is the tiger sick?
Or is it just present on/in the animal. Several animals besides bats have tested as being a carrier but not a host.

I just had hubs test out my heavy fleece....he said he can breathe through it.
He wants a test filter to try it out and see if it is to hot before I go cutting up my stash.
Great idea, it won't fray, not much if any light shines through so.....every layer of protection makes the masks better in my opinion.

Also remembering having saved the wire that wrapped my hardware cloth rolls......someplace.....
LOL...I save those little scraps of wire too.

Fleece is indeed warm to breathe through. 2 layers would keep my face warm (with nose and mouth covered) in -10F. It will collect moisture on the surface too.
I may resort to it after I run out of quilt batting though, especially if mask wearing goes into the colder months.

Have to wonder who they are feeding the lions.

Animal was/is evidently sick - fever, coughing, not eating.

True that there is trans species infection of viruses, but it is not the usual thing, and for a tiger given 'social distancing' to become infected is intriguing, and not to be discounted. It may be a change indeed. Hopefully not, but to discount it is absurd.

Ok, quick search show the NYT and NatGeo has articles stating the tiger in question is sick and others are showing symptoms.
I'll be following this, thank you.

I mostly agree with you, but I'm on the fence about this naturally occurring vs being created in a lab.
