I'm from her era. Those stories about Sears catalogs - yep, they're true. Every outhouse was equipped with old Sears catalogs.

Why is everyone obsessed with getting a lot of toilet paper?

The best theory I've heard is that actually looking at the stash of something necessary for everyday life gives "us" a sense of control in a situation we have no control over. Makes sense to me, but then, I have teenagers, so I ALWAYS keep an overstock of toilet paper!
