@USA Aussie Pete Haha, that's not what they meant. They meant the rules of this website - backyardchickens.com or BYC. :) I assure you that even if you could get away with breaking city rules for a month or two cause of the virus they'd be right back to fining you once it was all over. :T For years our city never missed a chance to inspect and fine!

I'm honestly nervous about getting groceries when I decide we need them. There's no meat and my family isn't plant based like me. They did say they would do it if they had to.

Meat chickens won't be ready for a few months and the meat ducks aren't hatching until Easter.

That's always the problem with prepping after the fact, right? G was talking to me about supply line delays for meat in his store and doing more veggie bases meals. We have four CX and four baby bunnies growing but they won't be ready for months.

Luckily we already do plenty of vegetarian meals anyhow. It's not like we dislike them. We have one vegan dinner planned this week and one vegetarian just by coincidence. And we have freezers full of food, enough to last a while. It's just something we are going to have to lean into a little harder.

Here in Spain is a good example of the delay in measures to limit the spread that China didn't have to deal with. Spain has semi autonomous regions, a bit like states in the USA. Each region has 'powers' and depending on the political bias of the government in each region and the competency of it governs what they can do in a given set of circumstances.
In Catalonia the health system is well funded and efficient but there are disagreements from region to region on how the crisis should be handled.
The USA will have similar problems.

I will have to be brave and venture out soon.

I must build a duck house. Things being as they are I need to go cheap/free. My feed store is 8 blocks from me. I am going to seek out pallets from their south side stacks. Their pallets are at least uniform at 40x48.
I have some (hopefully enough) random pieces of thin plywood. I hope to use it for the floor. I also have plenty of leftover metal roofing.
I do not have ANY 2x4's.
:th
Check with Lowes for their wood pieces used to support loads of lumber. I get lots of these and they work great for small projects.

I thought it was interesting. Until there is better evidence, if there ever is on what other health complications were involved in each death we're guessing. There is also the matter of differentiating between which groups contract the virus and which groups die from it.
There are always going to be outlying points around the median which people will drag up, but the median does seem to comprise the more elderly with other health concerns. As has been pointed out by a number of scientists, if everyone could be tested then we would see a much reduced death rate v infection rate. Many people will have contracted the virus and not even know they have it, putting it down to a touch of winter flu.
The business about China is quite complex. China due to it's social and political nature can do things that the democratic countries can't. They don't for example have to consider what thhe electorate may think of their response, or worry about the cost. They can mobilise millions without negotiation regarding wages and individual rights. A bit like a colony of ants. The instructions come down the line and everybody carries them out. So, they could build hospital units in days and completely shut down particular areas very easily.
One doesn't have to approve of the system to acknowledge it's strengths and weaknesses.
I think Russia will be similar in that they will want to keep the economy healthy by maintaining production while we in the West will be shutting ours down in order to protect our workforce.
From what I've read (all information we read from both China and Russia comes through western media largely so one must bear this in mind) Russia has shut it's borders and even go so far as to prevent airlines flying to anywhere apart from designated airports where everyone who enters the country gets tested, a bit like the disinfection of incoming travels to Australia a while back.
We, The West, are not doing any of this.
I find the whole business fascinating.
Yes I can see the pros and cons. I find it interesting as well. I hope the governments of the world take some notes to prepare for future events. I just know how to balance personal freedoms with swift, firm responses in this type of situation. Someone will always have something to cry about right?

Good idea, never gave it a thought, I am going to wait till next morn before getting mail out of our mail box. Its delivered early afternoon so next morn should be safe.
Good thing with the mail is most likely only two people have touched it, the first, and the mailman, all in between is done mechanically. But now I'm thinking all the mail touching mail that other people touched..... We are all going to become germaphobes before this is all over, Howie Mandell will be more normal than the rest of us 😆
