And now a new reason to be extra concerned about getting Covid...

I've been hearing snippets here and there for a while about people who have been having long lasting effects from having had Covid-19. Like persistent fevers, circulatory problems, heart issues, stomach/GI problems, among others.
Apparently it's becoming a more common thing now that there has been some time since the initial infections. They are being called/referred to as "long-haulers"

Studies in Italy, the UK, and Germany are showing that a majority of hospitalized patients still have long term problems, not just the patients that were in the ICUs, and here in the US it seems many middle aged people, who were previously healthy and not hospitalized for their Covid-19, are having on-going issues months later. A quick search on Long-Haulers pulled up many articles from reputable sources, so I'll let people who want to choose their own news sources look it up.

I remember a few months back doctors started warning that this was not just a respiratory illness like initially thought, but also a circulatory one. Heart problems seem to be a common complaint in Long Haulers according to the articles I read. Hopefully researchers are listening and following these patients because some say it took a long time for their own doctors to make the connection.

From what I’m hearing from my Drs is it has changed again and less people are being put on ventilators, but the virus is lingering in their system for months. Since we have never dealt with this virus it’s so unpredictable especially when it’s doing things differently all over the world. People in other countries are getting completely re-infected after the virus is gone for months.

Hard to say at this point if I’d get a vaccine because they are using the bare minimum for people testing it and there’s been a lot of complaints if side effects that are just like getting Covid, one being damage to lungs.

I don’t think they’ve been preparing where we are either. I believe they were left high and dry too.

Here they gave parents the choice and whatever choice you make you can’t change. You either do hybrid or home. In the high school if you do home, you have to convert to homeschool program so the school has nothing to do with it. I think maybe other schools should have done it this way and put less pressure on the teachers about online schooling.
I agree. If you're going to homeschool it should be with a tried-and-true program, but that doesn't seem to be the case in most places. After asking around a bit, I've found out that the serious online stuff here was offered, but not mandatory (except for those directly sponsored by the schools.) Most of my teacher-friends are pretty passionate go-getters, so they took the training. It'll be interesting ... and probably more than a little bit scary ... to see what happens with the rest of the schools & staff. I am very grateful that my kids are out. DD is LOVING her college classes - and those have been mostly online for years!

I hope they do and virus free. It’s sad that kids are being put at risk. My kids refuse to go to school at this point especially my sophomore... he’s read too much online.

I know the kids living right now will remember this forever.
Encourage them to write down their thoughts and experiences. Some people will end up selling books about it ... might as well be them, right? Regardless, their grandkids will appreciate the insights ... and maybe THEY will make a fortune on their book!

I was supposedly at a top public school and I didn’t learn very much to be honest. I was being programmed for the test all my life. My scores and my classmates got the school funding and their good reputation. It’s truly sickening. My kids complain about learning stuff on the test only... my oldest got an above average score and he was moved to honor classes... he wasn’t happy 😂 I’m sure he won’t do so above average on the next test for the state. He said he hated honor classes because he has to think. In regular classes he can relax and ace every test.
Good for you, his parents and his teachers for pushing him with the honor classes! My daughter ended up in all honors classes the last two years of school - and she worked her behind off. In the last of her senior year, she noticed the difference between her honors class friends and the rest of her school. We weren't even talking about honors vs regular classes. We were talking about how people change in HS. She noticed that "We (her friends and her self) have much more interesting conversations, now. We all really think about stuff. Its cool!"
We talked a little bit about "why," - about surrounding yourself with capable people, people willing to think and expand as opposed to those who took the easy way out ... and she got it! Heavens to Murgatroid ... She GOT it!
Now, if we can only get that thought to STICK!

My son is going to have to work his butt off this year! The online homeschool program is one you HAVE to be organized and be willing to spend time on things... it’s not easy in other words

He has to get a 3.5 GPA or they’ll pull him off it and he has to wait until the next year to re-enter public school. I told him he can’t mess around, no computer coding or gaming until after the days modules are done. If not we will be shutting off all his electronics with a touch of a button on an app.

...
. To grasp, the youngest is not there yet at 4+ months and still making not smart choices and having to "hand re-wash" when the load is done..... (Sigh)

And this morning we have a serious gullywasher happening as I type this. We have had the power black out once and a few 'brown outs' over the last 90+ minutes. So dealing with delays and distractions is also fun when we realize the mental distractions each one has because of "____". (Smirks)

Life. It happens.

Yup ... Life Happens ... so does schmidt. It sounds like you're preparing them well, regardless of how school pans out. As long as you saty aware and involved, they'll weather this - and all Life's Gullywashers, with creativity and perseverance. And as far as the negative reinforcing that having to handwash supposedly clean dishes goes ... at our house, that situation always garners a snicker and the comment "Some lessons come harder than others!"
