Open enrollment for the Affordable Care Act starts today. If you don't have medical coverage, it's worth seeing if you can apply and get some. Even if you've applied before and been turned down. Goodness knows we all need it right now, given the pandemic and all that. :T It's SUPER easy to apply also.

It might have been funny if there weren't too many freeloaders in this country who think they should have services without investing in our operations, our infrastructure and our culture by paying taxes.

If you click on the column heading for case per 100,000 population you have to go halfway down the list of states to get to a state where governors have been aggressive and the population has been cooperative. Even NY and NJ are below the national average for cases per 100,000 population and they got hit first, got hit hard, faced a breakdown of their health services right off the bat, and had crowding and public transportation helping spread the virus most effectively to boot. But when they got their feet back under them they started behaving proactively and now those Red states are leaving NY & NJ in their dust.
I think the case is closed. Maybe this will lay the evidence out for family or friends or neighbors who are still digging in their heels and behaving based on what they want to be real instead of what is real.

Oh I know. Theres never a thing as a free ride. I was military 12 yrs. Grew up in a trailer. Have been on welfare before.. Its there if you want to earn it. Most don't.
There was a time when my husband and I got food stamps and MediCal. We were young. We had a daughter who was still a toddler. I was having acute asthma episodes that put me in the hospital and sometimes even Intensive Care about every 8 weeks. Not only couldn't I work, my husband couldn't work full time because I or our daughter needed care all the time.
It was humiliating for my husband to go and apply for those benefits. I couldn't even support him by accompanying him because I was either in the hospital or recovering.
We had 2 or 3 dark years.
Eventually, we got back on our feet. Today my husband is probably in the top 2-3% of earners. We pay our taxes with gratitude that there was a safety net that saved us back then. And everyone who paid the taxes that provided that helping hand for us has had a very fine return on their investment because we've been paying taxes since and in the top bracket for more than 40 years.
I never make the assumption that someone's in for the free ride. ...'cause it's not that great a ride and adding shame to a hard time is diminishing the chances that that person at their low point will be able to make the steep climb to where we all want to be.

Yeah, growing up my parents dumpster dove to feed us. :T Nobody WANTS to be there. But there it is. Later, well after the recession, my dad got a job with NASA designing and prototyping long life solar batteries for interplanetary drones for nearly ten years before losing his job due to failing motor skills, so it wasn't a lack of marketable skills or ability. It was just happenstance.
Nobody deserves to be on the street or hungry due to bad luck. Health issues, accidents, deception, national relations, terrible greedy choices on wall street made by people you've never even seen before... Any number of things can send your life spiraling out of control. It's not reasonable for people to be homeless forever because of those things.
Honestly, in a nation that's supposed to be wildly prosperous, produces enough food and houses and clothes to feed and house and clothe the whole population many times over, and is supposed to be the greatest place in the world, it's not reasonable for anyone to be hungry, homeless, or unclothed for ANY reason IMO.

My cousin's husband's father is now on a ventilator. They are heartbroken of course. He's close to my age..has been very active and well.
