I have a weird question... when you buy birds from a supplier, are you concerned they might be contaminated? The person doing the packaging might have been coughing up a COVID storm for all you know, then you handle the packaging and the birds... How do you disinfect chickens?

I do not. Three reasons.

One, COVID effects a number of small mammals but zoonotic transmission back to humans is rare. None of those animals are birds.

Two, surface transmission risk is pretty minimal within a few hours. It's only rare circumstances that any of it lives on a surface more than a day.

Three, good handwashing and biosecurity is important even when you DON'T have COVID-19 around. When you bring the chicks home, stick 'em in a brooder, settle them in without touching your face, and then wash your hands well. Come back in a few hours and the risk is greatly reduced. Just don't go kissing your chicks, that's bad hygiene anyhow.

(Quick correction for later on -- "affects" :)).

I never can keep those straight. It wouldn't surprise me to see the definition changed within my lifetime, much like literally.

Something "affects" something else by having an "effect" on it. Does that help?
(I have the same issue with "lay" and "lie").

Those are the two pairs I can't keep straight either. And that's after going to Catholic school where they spent the 1/8 of our time not spent on religion on grammar! :lau 60 years later it still hurts my ears when people don't use the subjunctive tense.

Just pay extra for the little chicks masks. Joking!
