Corturnix Or Bob Whites For Hunters

One of my customers uses my culls for dog training, not hunting per se as they don't fly really. He got one of those of launchers and he says it works really well and he comes back for more. For hunting, however, not really a good option.

Would that be one of those clay pigeon launchers? I guess you could just stick them on there and give them a fling.

Well, I guess I'll have to "dummy this down" a bit. I said that no SERIOUS dog trainer would use cots to train a dog. Since a trainers goal is to train the dog to hunt what it will encounter in the field, that would be bobwhites, not cots. Cots do not fly or flush like a bob, so training a dog with cots can only teach him bad habits that will hinder his ability to "work" the "real birds" in the field, where it counts. If you were training a dog to hunt cots, then cots would be what to use to train the dog. If you were training a dog to hunt rabbits, you wouldn't use a kangaroo to train him. If someone is buying cull cots to train his dog, he's not much of a dog trainer, but he is valuable in the sense that he actually pays someone for their junk birds to ruin his bird dogs. The only similarity in a training sense, between the cots and bobs, is their scent. This is where the baloney sandwich comes in.

Yes, it's the pigeon launchers. I could only offer him my culls until my bobwhites grew out a bit. The guy was looking for scent and he ate the balogna for lunch

No, they make a bird launching device specifically for training dogs. It's basically a wire cage with a spring loaded floor and top with a remote trigger in the form of a foot pad. the the launcher is set, a bird is inserted into the launcher and the whole contraption is taken affield where it is placed to blend in with the natural type of environment. A pup is allowed to scent trail to the launcher, but placed "on point" and not aloud to get too close to the launcher, when the trainer is ready the "flush command is given and once the pup gets as close as the trainer wishes he steps on the foot trigger and the live bird is launched into the air or "mechanically flushed" and not given the oportunity to run off on the ground without the pup seeing it as many bob whites would do if given the chance.

These are commercially made training aids available for serious dog training

And if you're really really serious (& a decent pocketbook), you get the remote release.
