Coryza outbreak

Well a week or so ago I had posted about a Jap bantam that I had that was ill. I ended up culling that bird. Ever since Monday night I've been finding dead birds when I went out to shut them up in the coop. Tonight I go out and I find another dead bird. When I go to look in the coop to see about the rest of them I smell this awful smell. I noticed another bird that's not looking too hot so I brought it in the house for my wife and I to look over. We got to searching BYC with the symptoms and figured out what we had going on. Went back out and looked in the coop and more of the same symptoms. I decided it was time to cull before this somehow worked it's was into my laying stock. I'm really bummed! I lost thirteen birds this week and tonight.

I'm a bit confused about the smell part, was it coming from the hen house before or did it happen during the culling ?
How would you describe the smell ?
Did you remove the carcass after you culled them each time or maybe that was what was causing it ?

guess you might want to adjust your signature there then, and kindly reconsider the term "Jap" as it's offensive to quite a few folks. domo arigato.

I'm so sorry your flock got this horrible disease. Hopefully it's contained and you won't lose any more.

thatbloke, the smell was coming from the birds. You could smell it on them especially around their face. It smelled like something dead or rotting flesh. All the birds in that flock smelled that way. I brought one of the birds into the house to examine it and had goo running out of its nostrils and mouth, it was weak and lethargic. It had bubbles in its eyes. The first bird that I found sick had gunk in its nostrils, its eyes were goopy and her face was all swelled up under her eye. The swelling went all the way into the roof of her mouth. She had that smell too. I hope I never smell that again!

Oh sounds nasty..was it a recent import into your flock do you think that brought it in ?

The Japanese bantam..... was that a recent acquisition..thats what you mean by Jap bantam right ?

There's a few strings on here about coryza that should help...how many are left and do they seem ok ?

thatbloke I had just bought 10 of the bantams about 3 weeks ago. I have my standard size chickens in one coop/run and my bantams in the other close by. I had acquired 3 birds a little over a month ago and didn't have a place to put the newer ten other than with the other three. I think one or more of the last ones I got brought the disease in. I had to transport my last birds quite a distance and I think that stressed them causing the Coryza to flare up. All the birds looked healthy when I picked them out. I'm pretty sure that all of the bantams were infected. I culled them all because from what I understand about Coryza it's only a matter of time and once they are infected they are carriers for life. I cant take any chances with my laying stock.
