I think my chickens have Coryza. Pretty sure actually. Every Autumn and spring 1 or 2 get swollen, weepy pussy eyes and nose accompanied by a bad smell. Separating doesn’t seem to make any difference, if left with flock, it doesn’t spread.

Does anyone know any natural treatments for Coryza, or will we have to go down the drug path? Pls help me and my chooks 😢

Greetings!

I have not had Coryza myself (that I am aware of), but I did have an elderly hen a couple weeks ago that was quite poorly, I doubt Coryza though.

If your birds always get over it on their own I would give them supportive measures - keep them warm and dry lots of fluids and make sure they eat well. Give treats or left overs if the won’t eat, anything to keep them eating.

If they are really poorly and not eating then you can try something like infant liquid Tylenol to help them feel better.

Just like us with the flu or a cold, some meds to help with fever aches and pains does wonders.

Coryza is a bacterial infection (unlike flu or colds with us) so if they are really not doing well you can try antibiotics. I see you’re in Ireland so I am not sure how easy it is for you to obtain those meds.

But if you can get hold of antibiotics, the meds of choice are Erythromycin and Oxytetracycline, here is a good link on Coryza.

Good luck, hope your chooks will all be ok.

Hi, thank you for the reply!
This hen in particular has gotten over it once, so hopefully she can beat it again. I will have to go into the vets and see if they would prescribe them for me if she gets worse.

I am lucky I have my Horse Vet who works with me to keep not only my elderly horses well, but my flock. I also have a great small animal Vet who has her own flock and she is licensed to treat poultry.

Keep me updated on your wee lady I am most interested in seeing how she gets on.

Not great update 🙁 she’s refusing all food and water and mucus is pouring from eyes, nose and beak.

I checked in my drug cabinet - I have pain relief and an antibiotic that was originally for a sick Guinea pig, (which died so never opened) and what I believe is an antibiotic from 2 years ago from what was suspected as a respiratory illness in the flock but turned out to be gapeworm so also was never opened.

Would any of those be any good?
