Cost of backyard quail raising

Very much worth it. Do you get your quail from a hatchery or get eggs? Sorry for all the questions just super interested.
No problem. This is just a hobby for me, so I'm happy that I'm in break even territory here.
I've mostly purchased eggs. Myshire is a good source, though I've also gotten some from my friends here on BYC. I just invested in a celadon hen and two roos last week, but those are the only birds I've purchased.

What better chicks or fully grown quail? and How do you know if some are sick to avoid all of then getting infected?

That's why you want to get your birds from an NPIP certified source if possible. I'm on the waiting list to get NPIP certified, but they're not doing certs right now. NPIP birds are tested for common diseases yearly and their premises are inspected.

If you can't get NPIP birds, keep them in quarantine for a couple of weeks before you introduce them to your birds.

Whether you get chicks or birds depends. Chicks are cheaper, but you know gender for certain when they're older. With celadon, chicks are a gamble on whether or not they will lay celadon eggs. The hen I got is a known celadon layer.

I like hatching, so I do eggs. This is what I have in the incubator right now.

What are some reputable NPIP in California to order quail from im thinking adult Coturnix Quail?
I haven't actually worked with any in CA. There's Alchemist Farm, but I think they're really expensive.

I've gotten my eggs from Myshire Farm. They pack those eggs like they're pure, fragile treasures, too and have a great guarantee. I've had really good hatch rates from them too. The only time I didn't was a package that the post office drop kicked, and they replaced the entire shipment.

Anyone know where to get adult Coturnix quail in California and L.A.?
Southern CA? There's been a shortage there because of the New Castle's disease outbreak, but quarantine was lifted recently, so you can get them shipped there now. If you're in Northern CA, there are several of us who have adult birds for sale. We're not all NPIP certified, but we have good birds. Check out my web sites in my signature.
