Cost of grit for chicks and poultry

Hi,
Grit doesn't have to be expensive. I pay about 10.00 for a 50 lb. bag at Agway.
This is the company I use. They have been in business 125 years.
They have dealers all over the US.

Well, mine love to scatter it everywhere, sigh, so I'm not much of an example.
I need a better feeder for the grit. Takes me about a month to use that much.
I think it should last 2 months ,I think.

I keep getting mixed information. Do all chickens need grit? My chickens are in a coop/run combo with access to dirt. They are fed layer crumbles or flockraiser crumbles, along with occasional fruits/veggies and weeds from the garden. I have been told that because of their diet, and the fact that they have access to dirt, I don't need to give grit. What do you guys think?

I have a 25 lb bag I've been working on for over a year, and still have more than half left. This is for 50ish birds. They really don't need much, it doesn't get digested so they don't need a steady supply.

Kinda depends on your dirt, from my understanding. My soil was pretty fine and rich, non much in the way of pebbles/sand for them to use, so I toss some grit in the run every so often. If I feed something more likely to bind them up, I give some extra grit.
