Cost per egg

We put a hot/cold running faucet outside (ran through the wall of the laundry room), just to make it easier to bathe the dogs (three border collies and a great dane). We still have a hole in the sheetrock where the plumber had to make the connection through the interior wall. The first time we used it, we called it the $500 dog bath. The next time it was $250, the next $125 and on and on...

I think it's easier if you call that first egg a $1,000 breakfast, the rest are free!

According to Eggzy my cost per egg is 1.03. That does not include the cost of materials to renovate the hay shed into a coop and run, their treats, labor, or nothin. It just figures in the cost of feed. Last night I was told a lady sells eggs for a dollar a doz. I told the genneman that stated that to me I'd sure like to know what she feeds her chooks to be able to sell them that cheaply, he said he knows she feeds them corn. I told him if that's all she feeds them, they are not being fed properly and are not getting all their nutritional needs met. If you buy one dollar eggs, you gonna get one dollar eggs. I'll continue to give mine away to friends and famly b4 I undersell my eggs. Yeah, small rant here, lol.

Feed only I'm doing pretty good. Add in some "labor costs" for 15 minutes a day and WOW!

My MIL JUST yesterday bugged me about this. I said "Oh Im just breaking even". She was shocked. "You mean they paid for that coop already?" Uh Noooooooo. No point in counting that EVER. The girls will be dead and like 3 more generations after them...before that thing is paid for. So without the coop I sell for $3.50 a dozen....less .50 cents packaging (carton, ties, cards, etc) .25 cents per egg (and that feed, bedding, stuff like bluekote spray) I have 10 hens, 1 roo.

Im waiting for that first egg still and will be for quite some time Im sure. My oldest girls are 20weeks but they are a snobby bunch of bantam cochins so Im sure they wont lay just to irritate me lol and next in line are my flock of 13 10-12week old gals followed by 2 8 week old chickies. I had to buy eggs from the store because I cant afford to spend 7-8 a dozen here on farm fresh eggs. Im sure when that first egg shows up its going to run me about 5,000 I dont ever expect to break even but I do expect these girls to at least pay for their own food

. Well, not forgot, forgot. They are included in my Total cost. But I should really have it be part of my "everything but housing" CPD.

Nahh. I have a built in audience. My family goes to the Farmer's Market to sell produce twice a week already, plus I've got my wife selling to her office.

I've got a sneaking suspicion that after the initial spurt of people wanting the eggs the orders will stabilize at a much lower number.

I joined Eggzy and tracked my cost per egg for a little while, just for fun. But really, they are family pets just like the cats and dogs. I certainly spend a lot of money on the pets and will not be eating ANYTHING that comes out of the other pets.

I appreciate the fact that I have pets that give me something in return for loving them.

I have had people offer to buy them from me at work, but right now we are only getting 2 or 3 per day (6 hens, and we are a family of 5). We gave a dozen to my mother a few weeks ago and then a dozen to the neighbors...not exactly big business.
