Bad news 4 quail chicks dead and It's only day 5. Is this normal? If not any tips for keeping them alive will be appreciated. I thought it was the towel I used, as we found 10 orphaned ducklings on the road. I used it for the ducklings until we got home. Most of the chicks dead are golden. I got the eggs from a breeder and she wasn't sure if her quail were inbred or not. Since there is talk that if you breed golden to golden the chicks die. Is this true?-Feather Hearts

What are you feeding them, is it medicated and what percent protein is it?
Are you giving them any treats?
Do they have a heat lamp? Is it red?
Are you using any air fresheners/perfumes/carpet cleaner/chemicals like burning Teflon pans etc.?
Are there any drafts?
What is their bedding?
Did you help any hatch that died or did they have a difficult hatch?

I don't know about golden to golden breeding but you'd think if they hatched and were thriving then something is amiss. Sorry :/

They can be very friendly, especially if the breeder selects for calm, friendly birds. I have a white baby that is so laid back it will sleep in your hands and loves to be patted. It's mother is very sweet as is its father. It's sibling doesn't mind being patted (on its own terms) but doesn't like being picked up. It's father is from a different breeder and he is wild despite the fact that we've had him from a chick.

Look at my creatures enjoying their morning and I spied one in the nest box all cuddled up and in a hideaway so cute no eggs yet but my light is on the way as my original light idea didn't work ! X

Purely speculation here, but with that run being outside, I would be concerned that by using artificial light to extend their days combined with the rest of the environment telling them it's winter, you'd be putting their bodies under a lot of stress - one thing is telling them to breed and lay, everything else is telling them to stop.

If they were completely enclosed I'd be less worried as the temperature would be higher but they've got a lot of outside environmental influence there.

All my chicks have died. Got 2 new quail the day after. A&M male and Tuxedo female. I decided to buy a "Female" TexasA&M (and I Have heard that they are the hardest to sex) from the pet shop. When We took it home it was crowing, trying to mate the hens and fighting with the roo. So I seperated them and rang the pet shop. They said it was laying eggs. and since there were no other quail, it was definetly that one. So i have no idea what is wrong with this quail. Why can't it make up it's mind? What do you think? Roo or Hen?

I'd say it's a roo and the shop are lying to cover their own backsides. Wouldn't be the first time, won't be the last.

Can you vent sex to make sure?
