Coturnix Quail Basics- Information and Pictures Galore

On the scissors I really prefer a large older style kitchen type. All metal.
They open pretty wide and have a locknut & bolt to connect them.
I don't mind tightening them every so often, and I can sharpen them myself.

I planned to neck mine... any reason why you guys don't do this? I have a new pair of scissors for trimming legs and wings...

I don't know what that means?
Like wring or break their neck?
I don't know I never liked that way, we always have the heads cut off all my birds, seems more instant/humane, at least to me.
(And when I say "we" I mean my husband haha. He does all the killing I can't deal, but I'm a control freak so I have to micromanage the whole process ;) )

I hold them by the body, whack the back of the head off the kitchen counter and cut the head off with my hand pruners. Well, its snip and pull really. Then I drop them into a bucket with a lid on so they can flap about without spattering the walls lol.

My kids and I can clean a meals worth in about 3 min. per bird.

Mine went through heaps of food until I realized they were simply wasting it! They were bathing in the food and throwing it out of the feeding pan. Once I switched ot an old tin chick feeder the feed bill went down to nothing, compared to what it had been.

oh, gotcha, I hold them with one hand, scissors in the other. I quickly snap the neck, then cut.
i just bleed them out in the sink, hold a hand around the wings and feet.. Its so fast its over in a few seconds.
I got the GQF feeder and they cant waste feed as much. Plan to build a community pen in the spring with feed troughs outside.
From what i see that all but eliminates waste. And roll out egg trays too! I have my small breeding group in our heated garage.
They are pumping out the eggs, am getting 9 eggs a day from all 9 girls.

I've used kitchen shears that I bought from Walmart ($4) for the last year to skin my rabbits and dispatch and clean the quail. Then on a meat rabbit fb page someone mentioned the Joyce Chen scissors. I ordered some from Amazon and I love them! They are worth the extra expense. The people on the rabbit site that use them say they last for a long while.

Wow i need to look for them! I have 13 to process this weekend.

All my quail are going this weekend as we havnt seen egg one in over two MONTHS! With the price of their food, freeloading quail are NOT a wonderful thing.

Thanks for the tip on scissors, I ordered them.
My quail are getting processed Saturday.
Do any of you ferment feed?
That's what I did for meat birds/turkeys to cut down on waste. Haven't been doing it for chickens/quail mainly because it's more work when it's so cold!!! I should get back into it. I'm also on a fodder thread, going to try to do that as well.
I couldn't do rabbits! Little too cute & furry. I have a hard time with the chickens even though I make DH do it all alone.
