monarc look at a response i got for an ad for quail on craigslist in syracuse ny. i asked about this permit thing. i may sound like a am beating a dead dog but i am amazed that we need one and i don't think people know.

No, you don't need a permit. I have no pics, but go to Google and type in cotournix quail and click on images. Mine are brown, about the size of a softball.Thanks for askingUli

The breeder i just bought coturnix off of last saturday also breeds various types of bobwhite (which are illegal to sell/trade/give away in pennsylvania without a permit) I can almost BET she does not have a permit...she may even believe she doesnt need one.....I didnt have the heart to burst her bubble if she didnt know because she had hundreds of bobwhite quail and I didnt want to offend her.


Seriously though, if you want coturnix quail get em!

Just keep em indoors OR if you're in an area where your neighbors can't see what you've got keep em outdoors...you should have no problems just so game commission doesnt come around often....ours does around here because of bear...but it's legal for me to have coturnix and button quail. I wish it was legal for everyone everywhere so people didnt have to worry.

I actually have a silkie mix hen that has no silkie feathers and no feathered legs, but she has all the toes and black skin, and is the same color as this roo. I'm gonna try to breed them together and get a birchen silkie!

Wouldn't they make a cute couple?

Will take a lot of selective breeding to get the silkie back, but I hope to keep the coloring.

Oh, and for the record, Brutus DOES have black skin, his feet are just covered in red clay mud!! Dontcha just LOVE Kentucky??

As for the color i bet they will produce it too being as they both have it...may get some solid blacks too (just a fun guess hehe)!

I was in kentucky and I did love it actually, though if me and hubby could pick we'd live in SC or NC

I miss Florida, it's too cold here!

I was planning on breeding any pullet chicks back to the daddy, if they at least the right comb, feathering etc. That would most likely make the coloring 'stick'. It will be a project for sure, but it will be interesting! I will probably need to get some grey or black silkies as well to mix with, can't breed his offspring back to him too much! I think he is considered a grey anyway. He has pretty good type, except for that ugly coloring!!

Btw, my white babies are dolls!
