Coturnix Quail Basics- Information and Pictures Galore

Roosters of the quail and chicken persuasion are true gentlemen, aren't they?

My silkies especially will cluck and make a fuss when treats are fed to make sure the females get their share... it's so sweet.

My coturnix and button roos are stupid (atleast as of yet) they have not offered pressies to their hens...then again my scallywags aren't in full breeding mode yet....my buttons should be but my male hasnt even started crowing yet! Dumb dumbs i tell ya! Almost as stupid as my outside cat that keeps going in the live trap meant for the oppossum that's sneaking around....HE"S BEEN CAUGHT TWICE TODAY...YOU"D THINK HE"D LEARN! he has a full thing of food on the porch yet he walks the whole way to the woods and goes in the live trap for spagetti that he DOESNT even eat! animals...i tell ya...they're lucky i love them!

I just read the first and last page of this and was noticing that you didnt mention the other 'coturnix' species- button quail. Technically they are coturnix, when you look at the latin name and all hehe. Thanks for posting this though, I have been wondering random things about them.

edited to add that they also dont come from the same parts of the world.....however some subspecies that produced the button quails and coturnix quails are found in the same countries most are found in differnet parts......ie: Coturnix in northern snowy parts, Buttons in the southern warmthy parts.

So if I understand right, I don't have to provide perches in their enclosure? What about maybe some small plants to hide in if they feel threatened?

At what age do they start laying? I understand that they are mature at 6 weeks...yes?

Yep you can provide them places to hide but they will not perch and clasp on like chickens and other quial species do you can stiill provide them for them as cover and for scenery value but they wont get on them much if at all.
