Coturnix Quail Basics- Information and Pictures Galore

I played that and I'm next to my pens. My boys got very agitated at the new crow.
lol!! I bet they did! I'm sure they were looking for the offending rooster for a while after that!

I was out with my quail this afternoon and it was the female while on the nest (laying an egg?) who made that missle sound. Im not hearing the Co-Turn-nix crow from either of mine yet but they are both young.

They have a whole host of noises that they make depending on the situation. The one I hear the most is a whirring noise that they make when they see something they are interested in and are excited about - usually food! They also make a more rapid sound, a lot like a cluck when they are going somewhere in a group and are sizing each other up - again, usually they are heading towards food. If you have more than one rooster in an enclosure, usually only the dominant one will crow. When more than one start crowing, fights usually break out unless you separate them...

Thank you for that info. I will listen for more noises from them. Will the rooster most likely only crow if another rooster is in the area? I keep wondering why Im not hearing a crow and if I might have two females instead of a pair. None of the eggs laid hae hatched yet but I keep adding them to the incubator. Also, I have not noticed any mating between the two. Maybe it is too early in the season for hormones to kick in. I have noticed though that with my chickens, in the case of a cockerel and pullet pair of the same age the mating attempt begin well before the pullet is ready for any of that action! Do quail males mature sexually earlier than females? Of of them is definitely laying eggs!

Coturnix just stop laying eggs in the months with short light, they don't stop breeding.

There is a vocalization that is specific to hens. Roosters can make a similar sound but only at low volumes. It's a very loud irritating cricket chirp, and if you hear it from a bird at high volume, it's a hen.

Yes I do hear the crickets chirp sounds. Cant be sure of the volume though and I cant say I find it irritating.
I am not bothered by it either - it is what I visualize when people say that coturnix sing. If you can hear them singing like that from a distance, it's definitely from the hens.

You should be ok a couple weeks, but be sure to make a screen lid. They start popping like popcorn, and will spring out of there! I like using tubs since they are very easy to disinfect between hatching & cleaning times. I just rotate to a clean tub, then clean out the one they were in.
