Coturnix Quail Basics- Information and Pictures Galore

A Tibetan. Corntix are so different then when i had them in the late 70-80's! Mine were one third the size and a deep gold n black. Another question... Just spent the last few hours fighting with a hawk, literally. The drought is so bad he landed on the pen two feet from me and i had to physically get him off, more than once? Anyone????

Put some water out for it well away from your poultry. Make sure your runs are covered so wild birds can't poop in them.

I have had a lot of luck using coturnix quail to help with my buttons. I had an extra male button who was lonely so he gave him a pretty girl coturnix to keep him company. As far as he was concerned she was his mate...and he loved her lots. That little guy in the picture got attacked by the other boys so he got to hang with the babies while he recovered...and they really took to him.

Had anyone had success with dry incubation for quail? Just had a bad hatch due to too high humidity (I think). Out of three eggs only one made it. One was a breach and died and one died in mid zip.
My humidity was 65-71% the whole time but the paper towel under the last egg got soaked.

I am doing a "dry" hatch with 70 coturnix. Put them in last night with no water add to my styrobator. The humidity in my house runs 45-65% but I have a portable AC/Dehumidifier unit in the room. This is my second quail egg hatch with my own eggs. Had 30 out of 65 hatch last monday and Tuesday. Humidity got too high while they developed and hatched. So...I'm not adding any till lockdown. All the chicks I dissected were too big inside the shells and had foot/toe issues.some were alive but wouldn't have made it.

I would shoot for 35% humidity. You may still have to put a bit of water in. Remember, it is surface area not volume. Humidity also goes down with temperature, so it will not be the same humidity in the incubator as the room.

It is extremely difficult to get below 40% in my home. I use styrobators that can sometimes get as low as 35% if the dew point is low outside and my dehumidifier is cranked. Honestly, if I turn off the dehumidifier the humidity inside the bator goes up to 50% without me adding water. This place is like living in the tropics. I'm going to give it my best though. Hoping for a great hatch this time. It will be the last until spring.

Is there a way of convincing my dad to get jumbo cots, be says we have too many birds, so I'm going to try selling ducklings next year. I can easily make a run for them, I already have a suitable coop... any ideas, I have presented him with facts. Trying to convince him I have failed, but I will not give.
