Coturnix Quail Basics- Information and Pictures Galore

All colors can be jumbos. The jumbo browns are just big coturnix. The rest of them can be the same way. Some people's birds are not all jumbos and some people's are. Size depends on breeding and hard culling, colors don't change much. All of them are coturnix, and they can all reach the same size. Mine are all fairly big, most people's are now, there are not as many smaller ones left.

Good info about quail, but some of the "historical background" sounds more like mystical fantasy for example:
"They migrate over the mediteranian sea and that's where the Egyptians collected the weak flying in from the sea and where a lot of the domestication seems to come from. Also in Japan." (Front posting) A notion that any quail species is capable of prolonged flight (over Mediteranian Sea) is a proof of total ignorance of the various websites "experts".

I can not imagine how any quail species could make it over Mediterranian sea, they can barely make it across small backyard (we are talking flight not running).

Egyptians got them from far East (Japan?) not "collected" weak birds who flew from the sea. If that was the case then "strong" birds perhaps would continue to fly south ignoring Egipt and make it to South Africa?

What a tale, even beats my favorite one ( determining bird eggs sex with pendulum).

Once we get over "historical background" there is lots of useful info for newbees entering quail world.
