Coughing and gurgleing

My chicken has been coughing and gurgleing when she breaths for tge last couple days.... opens her mouth like she wants to gag something up and when she coughs/sneezes spit or something flys around. Can anyone help let me no if she is just sick or needs to go in because something major is wrong ??? She is at least 5 years old.

Can you post some current photos of her? A video of her actions may be helpful, upload to youtube, provide a link.
Does she have any mucous from the nostrils? Have you looked inside the beak for any obstruction, canker or yellow sores?
Have you added any chickens to your flock within the last 30 days?

Check her crop first thing in the morning before she eats/drinks and let us know what that's like - it should be empty.
Coughing and gurgling with spit - she may have a respiratory disease. If you have vet care that is best so you can find out what she has.

My R Red has been doing the same thing, came out of the hen house Saturday morning making a gurgling noise when breathing and some sneezing. Eyes clear and no runny nose, but breathing hard. I separated her and got some advice from a great lady I purchased two of my other chickens from. I administered a shot of LT200 antibiotic (1ml) last night and have been putting VetRX on her comb. Will give another shot on Wednesday (3rd day) She isn't drinking or eating a lot. Was laying down yesterday afternoon with her wing out to the side breathing slower. Won't drink the water with the VetRX in it. This morning she was standing up but still gurgling. I don't know what caused this, I have only had her 1 week and am watching and praying my others don't get whatever she has. I am wondering if this is fixed and she gets back to normal, will it return and come back?

@NewCknMama welcome to BYC. I would remove the water with the VetRx, and try to get your hen drinking fluids. Mix a lot of water into a small bowl of chicken feed, and hold it up to her beak. The oxytetracycline antibiotic may help if it is mycoplasma or MG. Viruses will usually run their cours over several week. I was told it is an upper resperatory disease and they used to sell it at the farm store here but it is vet only now. More than likely she just needs antibiotics. I ordered some vetrx medicine off of amazon that treats upper resperatory. Hope it clears her up the rest of the way and hope all gets better with your girl.

The viruses such as infectious bronchitis and ILT will not respond to antibiotics. The bacterial diseases such as Mycoplasma (MG) may respond to Tylan (tylosin) denagard, and tetracyclines. Infectious coryza may respond to sulfa antibiotics, or a combination of sulfa and Tylan.

Thank you for the information. She ate a little scrambled egg last night and was up on her feet. Still gurgling and coughed some like something stuck in her throat. She is not showing all the symptoms of gapeworm like yawning, breathing with her mouth open gasping for air, stretching her neck or shaking her head a lot. Looked like a little runny nose so I put some VetRX on her both sides of her beak around her nostrils and comb, under wings. She isn't drinking a lot of water so I didn't mix the VetRX with it, just some apple cider vinegar. Have you used Vet RX in the drinking water before? I tried it on Saturday night and Sunday but it looks oily on top of the water. Didn't mix well, even after I warmed up the VetRX and put it in warm water. Is it suppose to be like that? Thanks

Vet Rx is a mixture of herbal oils, and camphor. I wouldn’t use it in the water because you want them to drink well. Vet Rx is similar to Vicks plus some oregano, rosemary, balsam oils, camphor, and nothing in it cures infections. But many people say it helps their chickens.
