I had just been told that, so I added the question, but haven't found a good source for it being problematic in small amounts. (I haven't really had much time to look, though.) I think the confusion is from advice against using it to lubricate bound eggs, which is about not being water-soluable. Olive oil has similar concerns in that regard.Vaseline or petroleum jelly is not toxic. Every prescription eye and many skin ointments for humans contains petrolatum as a base ingredient.
