Could it be one of my Australorps is A Black copper Maran?

She does definitely haVe a Marans look, but no feathered legs as the black coppers should have, egg will be small as a new pullet but should be much darker if it were her first egg and she were a full Marans. However they can be variable early on too as they get into the swing of laying.
it’s nice to have a mix of colours and she’s a pretty gal whatever she is.
Here is one of my French black copper marans and an example of the marans eggs (compared to white Friesians)
Beautiful hen! It's nice to see one with a lot of copper in the hackle feathers. Many I see are all black.

I think she is a badly colored BCM, American style, which means without feathered feet.

Marans eggs do come in all shades, though always brown. What you got was lighter on the scale, maybe a 3 to 4, so not technically dark enough for Marans scale. But alas, even well bred Marans will throw a progeny with a lighter egg. (I paid really good money for a Splash Marans who came from a 7 line but laid about a 4 to 5). I expect she is hatchery quality.

They always lay a bit darker at the beginning of the cycle, and eggs are smaller at the beginning of any newly start lay, even with older hens. First year pullets remain smaller while the second year layers soon ramp up to larger eggs.

Without seeing the rest of your flock, I say you do have a BCM who is producing those eggs rather than an Australorp...she has the classic body type as well as the mohagany bay colored eyes of the Marans...does she have pink/white inbetween her toes? Another classic sign.

It would help to know a little more about your flock..... What breeds are your older girls and what are the ones you just added.
The bird in the photos has quite a pale comb so I would be surprised if she is laying.
The egg in question looks more like a welsummer egg to me.

I think the look of the comb is the lighting actually, they have huge windows and it washed out a lot of colour from the pictures!

We have BOs
RIR
Australorps
All hens 2 years
And one year old EE

So after extra looking last night 2 of our “australorps “ have this copper neck, 1 had feather strips down her legs and gold eyes as opposed to our australorp
Who we had before who has black eyes.

Darn! I guess we are out some Australorps lol

I think most people would probably be happy to score a couple of BCMs instead of Australorps just for the variation, although I understand that Australorps are great layers.
Just curious where you got them for there to be a mix up like that? Usually we read on here that TSC are the culprit, but I see you are in Canada, so perhaps not this time.

We got this group from a Poultry sale!

We are still happy with them, we looked for more Australops because of how quiet and hardy they were for us. ( with quiet birds we haven’t lost 1 free ranging with predators! It’s weird I’m actually just waiting for it to happen)

I was just shocked to see such a dark egg and honestly I don’t know enough about breeds to be able
Tell without help lol
