Could Sebastopol Geese and Ducks coexist in a 10 x 10? (UPDATE)

Remember, the cage--which is INSIDE AN 18 X 28 FT. STRUCTURE--is now 10 x 16.

But I think I might just forget the sebbies after all...............

I keep 5 white chinese geese, 11 ducks, and about 25 chickens in a 6 x 16 coop. It's also only for night time and they free range all day. The chickens all have a place to roost and the waterfowl are all on the ground. It works great for me and them. It's definitely their home, they all go in their by themselves at night. I would get those sebbies if I were you. How much room does any animal really need to sleep? And that includes people!

I have 9 ducks in a 10x10 pen (at night; they free range during the day) and there are issues with picking/fighting. I could never imagine having more than that in such a small area. I don't have geese...yet...but I would make them a separate area.

The huge numbers of ducks suggested in a 10x10, I would surmise are for immature birds. When the principal reason for keeping the ducks is for their daily morning offerings upon maturity, I would be concerned with their quality of sanitation if not being intact when in such crowded conditions as ducks tend to lay all over the floor. I would suspect that any comingling of the species would also increase the morning offering demise as the geese start to become aggresive at their season of impending need to make their morning offerings.

I suggest you see this link:

These pictures are dated from May. But just note that this is what we have coop-wise NOW.

Our setup is about to change as we complete our 18 x 28 structure IN WHICH WILL BE THE 10 x 16 cage, also near completion.

So I have more space than some of you may think. My fault, I should've mentioned this.

NOTE also, in the second pic. in the above link THE TWO CAGES. One is 4 x 8, the other is 8 x 8. I am thinking about the possibility of adapting the 8 x 8 for Sebbies.

THOUGH MY GOAL IN HUGELY EXPANDING OUR COOP AND PASTURE SPACE WAS SO THAT ALL THE BIRDS COULD SLEEP IN THE SAME QUARTERS AND MAKE CARE A BIT SIMPLER.

Finally, I plan on using the coops you see in the link for breeding coops, quarantine, and rowdy drakes.

Oh yes, and about the numbers of birds per sq. ft.

The great Holderread himself points out these number for ADULT BIRDS.

Example 1. He says that for MEDIUM TO LARGE breeds a minimum of 2.5 to 3 sq. ft. of space is sufficient if they will only be sleeping in there.

Therefore 11 Muscovies (large breed) would be fine with a min. of 27.5 to 33 sq. ft. AS ADULTS.

And Campbells (small breed) would need even less than 2.5 as a min. So let's say 2. That would mean that 14 ADULTS would be fine in 28 sq. ft. MIN.

I plan on having that exact number (25 in all) living in 160 sq. ft. Clearly they are not overcrowded in the least.

Example 2. (note: this is Holderread and not me) One 4 x 8 coop is sufficient for 6 to 12 ADULT BIRDS AS A BREEDING PEN.

Now, a 4 x 8 is 32 sq. ft. The cage I am about to complete is EXACTLY FIVE TIMES THAT SIZE (i.e. 160 sq. ft.) So, if you multiply Holderread's "6 to 12 ADULT BIRDS" by 5, that gives us:

30 to 60 birds can be placed without overcrowding at all, in a 160 sq. ft. pen.

There it is, right from the great himself............

FINALLY, AS THE LINK I POSTED IN THE PREVIOUS POST STATES: IN THE BREEDING SEASON, THE ROWDY DRAKES WILL NOT BE IN THERE WITH THE GIRLS. THEY WILL BE IN BREEDING PENS WAITING FOR SOME PRETTY DUCKS TO COME ALONG.
