as you can see we are a pet family, when we went to adopt Emma (actually went to a foster home to get her brother, but he was gone) Emma and Maggie crawled in my lap and suckered me in. That was the only time as puppies those two dogs slept...I swear they drugged them before we got there  
Emma is Basset/Beagle mix and we were told Maggie was a B&T Coonhound mix, the more I look at her the more I feel like she had to have rotty in her blood someplace. 
They look so small in these photos ....Todd wanted to be in the pictures too...lol

Sally- Maggies does look like a rottie mix, very cute dogs. I think Spur looked small in the pic I sent you , he is 125lbs lol. I have 2 other dogs that were rescues also, that is the only way I get my dogs.

It was nice enough here today that my chicks were able to spend time outside.They will be 2 weeks tomorrow and tehy spent 5 hours in one of those cardboard rings for chicks. They had a blast digging and sun and dust bathing, it was so cute. Got the chicken tractor done so next time they can be in that.

So I have a question...when do roosters start acting like roosters? I mean is there 'rooster tendencies' as chicks? I just noticed that there is one chick that usually is the first to get picked up and its because when everyone else runs ....it stands up really tall and stays put...like its acting all tough...maybe it just likes being picked up...but I don't know...I also ordered the breed standard of perfection from my local library system to start reading more than the blurbs on each breed here and covered in other books I have read. I noticed the comb on one of my birds today starting to grow...I thought that was a little early too. It looks so cute!

So Maggie used to weigh just over 100 lbs until we got her on a serious diet...I mean the dogs tummy was dragging on the ground. When I walked her she would just lay down on the ground and quit. She got HUGE living with my father ! He can't help himself with animals...but yet he isn't an animal person

. I think this is how it went at the shelter, black and tan puppies...cant tell people what they really are so lets find something else to call them....then someone will adopt them . I would adopt her no matter what and actually love dobermans and rotties...but I think it was a fear of never getting her fostered or adopted out. Her and Emma came as a joint package around 8 years ago. Todd was adopted 7 years ago but he was three years old already. Then we have some fish. I swear the chickens are the last animals unless we buy a farm lol.

Spur is healthy not over wweight at all, goodness what would he be at an overweight size..... I love dobies and rotties and pitts. People put this big fear of a certain breed is bad. There is no bad dog just bad owners. A poodle can be just as mean as a rott if raised that way, and usually have attitudes anyways, I am NOT a small dog person lol. I really hate that a certain breed is picked on it just shows how ignorant people can be.,... I will not say that the chickens are the last animal because I know it isnt true, I tried it doesnt work with me.

Edit--- sorry, forgot your question.. I dont think you will see any for sure roo activity till later. It may be sooner too dont get me wrong, I think it may be different per breed and per hatch really. Sometimes when working out that peck order whoever is on top may act big and puff out their chest even at a young age. I like to take notes of my findings and thoughts and guess on sex and keep a little chicken journal and see as things change if my guesses change as well.

Boys are much more outgoing as chicks. They are usually the friendliest ones. I notice combs as early as week 2, but not at a week old. With EEs it takes a bit longer. You can sex EEs by colour once they are feathered out.

Here is a 5 week old barred rock girl. Comb is even smaller than her brother - and she is 3 weeks older. Some girls are outgoing. In my experience, the boys are usually more-so.

Also - don't look at how they stand at all. Ignore that completely.

Otherwise I would have rehomed this 'rooster' at 2 weeks. Turned out to be a very good laying girl.

Ya know the boys do seem to be more brave than the girls as chicks. The pullets I have are doing great, I didnt think that hatchery chicks would take off like they have. Today 2 weeks old and they have wings feathered out and tails half there and starting to feather down their backs and on their chests of course teh few exceptions becuase not every breed grows the same, but even the ones that are not up with the rest are at least showing tail feathers. I was ready for weaker chicks, not as fast growing. This is my very first order from a hatchery and have heard the horror stories, but I will keep promoting Ideal Poultry because the chicks are strong and healthy and even the one that was weak I brought her back with help from people on here and the other one that is partially blind well that happens she is still just as strong and healthy as the others. I think it is a birth defect though because I can see how her eyes are misshappened. But she finds food and water scuffles with the rest of them and is actually the biggest of the bunch. Ok anyway I completely went off subject sorry guys,,, the little white pullet she is cute what breed?
