Countdown to receiving new chicks on oct 9th week

I have two kids, although the older (4) isn't interested in them much, says they are cute...I haven't let him hold theme tsc because they are still so young. I love the look of your frizzled silkie...and the polish little poofs are so cute. I'm really debating getting bantam "pretty girls" in the spring. How hardy are the silkies? Care and upkeep on them? I just took a few of my girls out to play...Ancona took off and I had to follow her as she ran under the table through the potatoe basket etc . I feel like I'm just starting to tell them apart. Although at quick glances I'm still confusing them and I have doubles of two breeds but everyone just looks so big already. Feathers are growing in. Someone keeps roosting on top of the ecoglow sides...not even on the top of the heat part. This week is the last week upstairs and I thinking of building them a jungle gym for the bigger home downstairs. They played chase this morning with the last little piece of weed...it was hilarious.

Silkies are very hardy. Not any different than other chickens. Have you completed their outdoor coop yet? Having a covered run is a benefit with any feathered legged breeds. Also, love the Houdans. I would recommend them to anyone.

Here is one of my young girls. They are great layers, are fancy, and are very hardy. I love how they play keep-away. They are like "Don't follow me! It's mine! It's mine!" No one is paying attention until they start that

It is so true...there was a huge plot of greens a piece of arugula hanging yet they all want that first tiny piece that one brave chickie grabbed....the outdoor shed is being converted to a coop with an uncovered run. Then a few weeks ago my dh brought home seven pallets for me to make a second small coop for whatever I liked. Big coop is his project, I'm not really allowed to help there lol. I've also been told if I break a tool he gets a new and better one lol. I am not known for being handy...is just get the ideas :)

Are hawks an issue in your area? They aren't here, but in the US I hear horror stories. Most people build covered runs for the safety of the flock. Silkies (and any other crested breeds) can't see as easily as uncrested birds. However, a rooster will help this.

Are you allowed roosters? I can't remember if you said you were or not.

Oh the run has. Hardware cloth on the top...just not a "roof" that is going to keep rain out. No roosters allowed here. Hawks apparently are an issue, I've never seen any but within twen minutes of my house there is a hawk watch site soooooo lol I've also seen owls. My biggest problem will be raccoons I think. So hardware cloth is covering every opening.

Good idea, I have alittle of everything here. A hawk came swooping in on one of the neighbors chickens a couple days ago, we share a driveway and I saw it happen so that is a huge concern for me. My youngest turkey will sit and watch out and has been a great lookout crying "hawk" when she sees a circling predator over head. You Go Storm Good Girl....

Good choice!

Hawks don't need hardware cloth, but definitely for raccoons. Have you already bought it? It's so expensive!
