I know it's normal to lose some chickens to coyotes, but the only ones I lost were buff orps! Do these coyotes have a thing against orps?! Can I just not get them anymore? Because they're my favorite kind!

Probably being docile and slow, they are the easiest to catch. When the buffs are gone, they will move on to something harder......but will still catch them.

My daughter has a buff and it is still alive going on two years at a site that infested with predators. Coons, coyotes, foxes, etc. But it is in a tight coop predators can't get in.

I guess that does make sense especially since they all free range.

It is a bit of an exaggeration I admit, but I tend to think of true free ranging birds in an area infested with predators as being already dead. Not a matter of IF, only When. Not a happy thought, but is closer to reality than we like to admit.

So long term solution is a tight coop that protects the birds at night......and a zone of protection out on the perimeter of where we allow them to roam by day. That usually means some type of fence. My preference is an electric fence designed for poultry.
