Coyote!!!!!!

Coyote's are really good at pest control. Most of their diet consists of small rodents. Even a small pack of yap yap dogs would deter a coyote. They don't like anything calling attention to them.

Just a side note, if you use a dog as as deterant for the coyotes. PLEASE make sure the dog has been spayed or neutered! First time that male dog gets a wiff of a female coy in heat you are done for! You will end up with a bunch of coydog pups that you really don't need around!

plus most of the cats were kittens and were left to die on the door step of the clinck so if peolple would start shooting more coyotes and then the wont be so over runing the place and wount b forced to eat ore chickens.

As it was mentioned, try a electric fence and including music!

IF you have a farm supply store near by, you should be able to get a low cost solution for under $50 and with wire and say plastic/fiberglass poles, you should be able to secure your coop for less than $100.

Run two rows around your coop area, close as possible in most areas so if something runs through the fence, it won't have any room to roam around inside it without making contact again with the electric fence. with the first run of wire about 6-8 inchs from the ground and the second about 12 inchs above that; a third run around would even be better.

On the electric fence charger, solor powered is an option if AC supply isn't available, these run off batteries which charge during the sunlight hours, but you can get non-solor which run off batteries too which require you to replace the batteries

I have not had any critters (yet) get into my coop and I keep a radio on in my garage which is about 50 yards away from the coop, with my history of no critters I'm scared to not turn it off. I have heard of some who use motion light detectors wired up to radios so that it only come on when something triggers it; in this manner the critters won't become use to the noise and it provides a signal to you that something is prowling around be it human or animal.

Trapping/shooting may not be an option since too as already mentioned, others will simply take their place so it better to attempt to keep them loosely trained and condition to stay away.

When we moved in here we had coyotes that would come up to within ten feet of our front door. We had small children and small dogs and the coyotes would stand a distance away and just watch.

We happen to live in the country and got permission from our local law to shoot to kill if we so chose. However, I also hate to kill unless really necessary. They coyotes were here first - we moved into their territory.

We got two big dogs. They completely keep the coyotes off our 40 acres. We watch the coyotes coming toward our place and then veer off to the neighbors land to go around our land. Our German Shepherd mix will literally chase any/all coyotes to our fenceline if they do come onto our place.

So - if you can get a big dog that would help keep a coyote away. However, you would need to have a breed that is slightly more protective of his/her home. Our next door neighbors have Golden Retrievers and they let the coyotes come right up to their barn. You can rescue a puppy or dog from a shelter - just try and make sure it has something like Shepherd (but not Husky as they are generally runners) in it. If you could get a big dog make sure you do a lot of research before doing so. Many breeds just wouldn't work for this type of 'protection' but you also want a friendly family dog. (I could go into pages of dog stuff here as I've trained them, shown them and worked with them for about 30 years.)

If getting a big dog is out of the question I would go with the electric fence suggestion or the use of a paintball gun.

They are smart animals. Something that DOESN'T chase them isn't going to work. The christmas tree might startle them a few times but that will be all. You could even rig up a robot that swings its arms, the would just stay right outside its reach. Let me say again they are SMART animals. There is a reason they weren't exterminated like the wolves.....

Poison isn't the answer either.

A gun, a man, a dog or jackass is what you need.

Bubba

PS Yes a jackass they will gladly stomp them to death and protect any and all animals they grew up with.

If you live in the city, this probably isn't an option, but Bubba is right. Donkeys and mules will keep a flock or a heard of smaller animals safe. They will go after a coyote with front feet like a rottatiller.

My mules love THEIR dog. They play tag in the pasture, but they will not tolerate any other dog in their pasture, On the trail, under saddle they will tolerate anything, even bear.

Hot wire is the way to go fo you, I think. I'm gonna be rigging some up for the black bear that's been visiting. So far he hasn't gone anywere near the coop, but if he does, I want him to know right away that it's a painfull experiance. I learned on another thread that their fur is too thick for the shock to get thru so you have to bait the wire with peanut butter so he gets a good zap. That would probably work with coyotes too.
