What about 6 ft wood fences? We had coyotes spotted in our neighborhood recently....the chickens should be safe in the coop, but I worry about our dogs going out in the yard to do their business without us...

Coyotes are very smart, but they are also opportunists. If something is more trouble than it is worth they won't bother. Where I used to live in California we had lots of coyotes but I never lost any livestock to them. I had LGD's patrolling the place. I would suggest you look into electrified poultry fencing. I think it is available from Premier and it does a good job of keeping critters in and predators out.

Before I covered my pens, a coyote went over a 5' fence into a pen it also jumped back out as well as some of the birds. It did mange to kill a couple of them and one died the next day from it's injuries. I did get a shot off from my back door as it was chasing a bird through my back yard. I'm sure I hit it but I had bird shot so didn't kill it but it took off.

I have all of my pens covered with some good heavy duty netting, electric wires around my coops and pens and concrete under the gates mostly due to losses from coyotes and fox. When I first put the wires up I did hear something make contact with the wires. Now I think the adult predators teach their young that a chicken isn't worth getting zapped for. It may not be too pretty but works. Most predators explore with their noses. 20210115_095548.jpg 20201129_095137.jpg
