coyotes out during the day?

It's not uncommon to see them during the day, but I only ever hear them at night. We had a really bold one here a few months ago that was hanging around even when my daughter was doing barn chores in the middle of the day---He wasn't sick, just stupid.

After our coyote issues, I read quite a bit and learned that many scientists believe that the coyote may not actually be nocturnal. Instead, it has chosen to become active during the night where there is human pressure.

Wherever they are not hunted or harassed, they become more active during the day whereas animals like raccoons, etc., still prefer to be active at night regardless of what people are doing.

I'd say a coyote out during the day is likely bad news, not because of the potential for disease, but because of its lack of fear of humans. Watch your children and animals. Reports of bold behavior generally precedes attacks in urban areas where they've been a problem.

My daughter swears she seen a coyote out in the field the other day. It was during the day, and it was alone. Is this normal? My husband said it could have been a scout?

They are out here in the day all the time. I usually see one hunting rodents in the meadow. We like to hike a lot, which means usually we get out of the back gate up the mountain. There we have slash piles full of California ground squirrels. The coyote love to eat them, and we always find one for two of them out there hunting. They have challenged our dogs, so we now always hike with a rifle. A shot in the air makes them run like crazy.

I have not ever seen a coyote, nor do I want to. However some friends that have a place near mine said they saw some about a month ago walking across their field and it was about 3 0'clock in the afternoon.
