Coyotes--Where do they eat their kill?--Sad Update :(

Sad update. I found my cat with the help of one my dogs, she picked up a scent and all her hair raised up, she knew something was wrong, I followed her to his body. It looks like the coyotes just killed him to kill something. He had a small hole in his side and one piece of entrail was pulled out (hope that isn't too graphic). I am very sad he was killed for fun (or whatever), but I am glad he was not eaten because now I can give him a proper burial and know what happened. But, needless to say, I feel like going to WAR!!!

I just wanted to thank everyone who replied...thanks so much!

Coyotes will kill cats but usually for food. Your cat could have been killed by something else not interested in eat it. BTW in NYS coyotes are a protected furbearer and can only be hunted from October 1 to March 25. However, nuisance animals can be trapped or shot if they are caught in the act. In someplace like Weschester Co. you need to contact either the DEC or animal control for your area.

I am so sorry Peaches Lee! I know the pain of losing a beloved cat as I have been through it more than once.

Try one of those predator guard night lights, I hear they work ! They are in the Murray McMurray catalog on website.

Thank you all. I am quite certain it was coyotes as I heard them howling last night. I could kick myself for not going out to investigate, I probably would have been too late though. I can't think of any other indigenious animals that would harm him. I have found coyote hairs along my fenceline and trails. Plus they have been howling a lot...

I guess I am so shocked about this because this has never happened with my cats before on my farm here in PA. Thank you so much for the condolences!

Coyote rarely kill for fun like their cousins the domestic or feral dog.... Something could have scared it off, but they kill for food not sport.

So sorry about your pet and that is very sad.

Here in AZ if your cat is out at night roaming around it is just a matter of time so folks keep them in or restrained so they are safe like we do with our chickens.

red fox hunt cats too Pa is kina red fox territory if you find remains it was probably yotes if you find the whole cat it is more then likely fox fox do with cats what cats do with mice they kina play with them until they are broke feral cats have almost disappeared since we got yotes so have small dogs and tame cats though.

A raccoon will kill a cat...but it won't leave the body. It eats it. I had a few cats show up at my place and I began feeding them. One night there was a rucus on my porch and a cat was screaming. I went out there and a raccoon went halfway up a tree with cat in its mouth and stopped and looked back at me. I punched the 'coon in the head and it released the cat and jumped out of the tree and ran off. Since the cat was dead and it was 3 a.m. I left it with the intention of burying it in the morning. The next day I went out there and the cat looked like it had been skinned with head legs and tail intact, but literally all the meat gone! It looked like some kind of a cult ritual thing and, had I not known a raccoon killed it, I wouldn't have any idea as to how the cat got into that condition.

As for what happened to your cat, it sounds like a domestic animal killed it like a dog, as someone already said. A wild animal most likely would have eaten it.
