Coyotes

I live in east-central Kansas. A few years ago (maybe 10) we had lots of illness in the coyote community. Mange was so rampant that it was passing to dogs in their territory. The rabbits and deer were out of control (rats with antlers at that time), and the state dropped medicated bait to stop the mange problem. Of course a huge percentage of the coyotes died off. The next year, there were lots fewer coyotes, and it has taken time to rebuild the population.

This year, they are healthy and fat and HUGE. There are lots of coyotes, but you don't see as many rabbits. I had one at least 2' tall at the shoulders at my back fence a few weeks ago. It stood there and watched my 3 dogs go ballistic and then loped off into the pasture back of my house.

The wild animal population around here goes in circles. When one species becomes overpopulated (like the deer and rabbits were when the coyotes were sick), something happens to thin them. Illness, predators, whatever. That is how natural selection works when we don't interfere with it.

I am not comfortable with coyotes that close during daylight hours, but they have their place in the ecological balance of the area. I really hate it when rabbits eat my peas, but I have learned to spread dog and human hair around the baby plants in early spring to deter the rabbits. I had a deer in my beans last summer, so I sprayed the area with deer repellant (yes, it worked). I don't set traps for them or try to shoot them (assuming I could hit them anyway). I choose to live in the country among these species, so I have to learn to deal with their predations in an environmentally responsible way.

Didn't mean to rant. I'll be getting off my soapbox, now.

Yes,Jim, I did. There are almost always better alternatives to things humans do.

DS walked outside last night to get something and he had a small flashlight with him and there were 2 OF THEM 6 FEET FROM OUR FRONT DOOR!!!

Then at 11pm we had one howl so close to his room it scrared his cat, set the dogs off and woke me from my dozing. Woke DH up too.
went out in robes and slippers and my big flash light with the .22 mag. Just caught a glimpse of that coyote going over the hill.

oswegoscott I have never stated that I have NOT lost birds to coyotes. Just this time there was no loss. I lost count years ago of how many birds I have lost to coyotes, coons, skunks, cats, raptors, and dogs.
If you want to argue and push your own ideas onto someone please do it on a different thread or start your own.

Exactly!
We have lived here a little over a year and we would frequently hear the coyotes across the road near the poultry farm. It wasn't until last Thursday night that I started getting worried. Hubby was at work so I went outside around 9pm to put the horses in their stalls. Nothing out of the ordinary. Came inside and then I heard it. They were loud and yippy right behind our house. This is the closest they have ever been to our house, too close for comfort for me. IMO if a coyote doesn't seem to be bothered by a human occupied dwelling, lights, human scents and all the activity around, that is a problem for me. I will take lethal measures to protect my family & livestock (which are our pets).
I turned on the outside lights and left them on all night, not that it probably mattered

Everyone has their own means for predator prevention, what works for one may not work for others. HERFRDS your method works for me.

We're not here to judge, circumstances differ for everyone.

PS - HERFRDS I'm glad noone was injured including your chickens.

Do believe it is Five Man Electrical Band and also misquoted.

Never mind, what I said earlier has already been covered. I should have read the entire thread before posting.

So,you've allowed your birds to be taken for years. The preds developed a liking for chicken- now they bother your neighbors, too,I reckon.
I haven't LOST a bird to a predator IN years- 1968 to be precise. I then started practicing what I preach. I didn't come to argue--only to
offer an alternative that has put ALL my chickens in MY pot for 40+ years without killing countless predators. I once had a fox den
under my woodshed! I thought it was great--so did my grand-kids when they saw the kits. For 3 years the momma hardly glanced at my birds.
She was smart enough to know it was futile to try and take one. Then I found her dead on the road. I felt privelaged to have her around that long.

oswegoscott I couldn't care less about your practices. They are not mine.
As for them bothering my neighbors yes they do. He only lives 4 sections away as the crow flies or over 10 miles by way of the road.
So you know a section is 640 acres.

They have killed some of his wife's sheep, his birds, harrassed his cattle and killed a couple of his dogs.

Please go start your own thread and get off of mine. You started posting to push your own ideas and you were rude in your first postings. even when you were warned by the moderators to be nice.

Bye!
