Cracked Corn to Bobwhites?

Quote:
Even Half grown Bobs can eat whole corn, no problems at all..U should watch them eat whole lizzards and bugs

Whole corn from the cob, yes. Dried hard corn, no. My bobs can only swallow small pieces of cracked hardened corn.

My Bobs Will Eat Whole Kernel Dried Corn, Its Not Hard Really, They Just Have To Break It Up Before They Can Swallow It. For A Full Grown Bob Thats Not Much Of A Challenge, I Mean Their Beaks Are Built Like And Work Just Like A Large Parrot... You'd Be Surprised What They Do To Hard Corn Kernels, Even My Valley's Love Whole Corn And Relish It. Do I Recomend It As A Daily Staple? No, They Use As Much Calories Breaking It Down To Edible Size As They Will Gain From Eating It. So, If Your Worried About Feeding Them An Increased Corn Ration For Caloric Content And As A Dietary Suppliment To Aid With Dealing With Winter Low Temperatures Cracked Corn Is More Readily Consumed And Requires Less Work On The Bird's End To Consume

EDITED TO ADD: CORRECTION, THEY PREFER TO BREAK IT UP BEFORE EATING IT, THEY ARE CAPABLE OF SWALLOWING IT WHOLE...

Ok....so WHY don't my Bobs eat whole corn?? If they were starving to death, they could never eat a whole piece of dried corn.

I CANT SAY FOR SURE ABOUT YOUR BIRDS.... MINE I ACTUALLY GIVE WHOLE KERNELS TO AS A TREAT OR SNACK IF YOU WILL. I CAN START THE MOTHER OF ALL QUAIL FIGHTS WITH A SINGLE KERNEL.... SOMEBODY GRABS IT AND STARTS TO SPLIT THE KERNEL AND THEN THE REST MUG HIM AND ENDS UP WITH NOTHING WHILE THEY STEAL AND EAT THE PIECES... THEY RELISH CORN IN ANY WAY, SHAPE, OR FORM HERE AT LEAST

.... ESPECIALLY FRESH AND ON THE COBB~~~ OMG THEY LOOSE THEIR MEAN LIL MINDS OVER FRESH... THAT STUFF'S LIKE CRACK TO 'EM. PERHAPS ITS A LEARNED APPRECIATION

You know JJ, that is exactly what I am thinking. Not only spoiled, but over fed with goodies!! LOL. That is not to say that they don't get plenty of gamebird food, but I do love to bring in the treats..you know, to keep them lovin' me.

So no doubt they just don't have to bother with difficult food, knowing this "treat dispenser" is bound to bring in more easy to eat food!

Cracked corn will actually do damage in pigeons. If fed corn THEY need to have whole. A birds mouth is as big around as the base of their beak/bill, if the grain is smaller than that they CAN eat it, although they might not. As far as the grinding in the crop producing heat it's just friction like rubbing your hands togather. Your muscles produce friction when you move which is why you are always colder sitting still and get hotter doing work or moving around. Corn is also fattier than alot of grains so it provides extra insulation as well.

HOW INTERESTING?

DANG AND I ALWAYS THOUGHT IT WAS THE CREBS CYCLE ALONG WITH CELLULAR RESPIRATION

If you feed 'em bubblegum, their little gizzards will work so hard that they'll burst into flames. That's how Santa keeps quail at the North Pole.
