but I have read repeatedly to wrap in a wet or damp paper towel...

To some folks.(not BYCer's) a chickens is just a chicken.but not to us.
It sounds like you had the cards not in your favor having had someone fill in some days for you.
I am certain things wil be differnt for you next time.
You asked for experiences.
Last year during a bad storm two of my beautiful 12 week old pullets got locked out of the barn and froze.........
I was in bed crying for a whole day and still feel ill when I think about it.
You did the best you could at the time.
I tell myself.put a time limit on the guilt....................15 minutes maybe.
