Craigslist ad for free chickens is working!!

Few things feel as good as having meat in the freezer! And always remember FFTB (free food tastes better)

Man, I'm glad you are having better luck than me! I scour Craigslist regularly and find plenty of chickens, but not a lot of people willing to give/sell them for meat!

We need someone like booker81 here!

for sure--I have posted free roos everytime I have them and no one comes or wants them--oh wait excuse me...they want me to drive a few hours to their house to drop off free roosters--what??? sorry Ill process myself at that point which I always do :-(

I looked and looked on CL, and all the ads were for "to a good home, not for meat", but all the folks who've contacted me didn't want to list theirs because they didn't think anyone would want them for meat LOL! I'd say just list a simple ad, mine is working great. I thought it might get flagged, or I'd get hate mail, but neither has happened.

The rocks still had pin feathers in them, they probably could use another month, but dressed out at 4-5lbs. The SLW were more like 6+lbs, but they were hatched in April. I have never seen so much fat in a chicken! LOL! When I cut the vent area , there was a GOB of fat over an inch thick, and when I took it out, it was a block of fat about 1" thick, and 4"x3". Bright yellow fat! They will be awesome stewed up!

I think my difference is that I don't really care about having "young, tender chicken." We hunt, so even the birds we eat - duck, goose and turkey - aren't "young". They are however yummy when processed and cooked right. The Rocks I'll be able to roast no problem, but the SLW will need either a crockpot or a soup pot - which is fine and totally dandy by me. We love chicken soup and chicken and dumplings. The banties will be simmered and the meat removed, and then the carcasses simmered some more to make a whole heap of broth. I should be able to make a good couple gallons from them.

The roos:

(I chopped one of the rocks up already - ran out of Foodsaver wrap, so that one went straight to the freezer in baggies)

Good for you, and good thread. There are lots of people on here who have extra roos and don't want them eaten, but eating them is life in the chicken world. Maybe some will rethink this a bit -- to me it's about treating them well when alive, not how long they live. Being a roo among a flock of too many roos can't be a good life, anyway.

When I was starting my meat rabbit project nobody really posted ads on CL for meat rabbits and people get a little upset when I tell them what I wanted to do. But when I posted a ad for what I was looking for, here I am almost 2 months later and people are still contacting me. I think I'm going to post a ad for chickens...If its free its for me

Booker81 -- So you were driving around in that crazy blizzard -- you brave soul! Would you ever take old layers to use for stock? I'm in Midland and sometimes I try to find new homes for my old layers. Whether they become a yard ornament or in the soup pot -- I don't care. I don't have any at the moment, but it would be great to know if you'd like some when they are available.

By the way -- those look like some nice birds you processed!

Well I posted an ad similar in wording to your, on my local CL, and it doesn't show up! I even deleted, reworded a bit, and reposted it, and still no go. Did you have trouble getting yours to appear? Mine hasn't been flagged, and I didn't get any error messages.
