Crazy chicken lady?

6chickens in St. Charles :

Hello Crazy Chicken Ladies! Can you help me with good replies for "OMG if you had chickens nextdoor to me I would hate it" sorts of commentary? Or other snobbishness?

In my Crazy Chicken Lady world, the fixer-upper only got fixed up AFTER the chickens moved in! Couldn't let the chickens suffer a messy yard.... keeping up to City Code for their shed/coop resulted in new fence, porch swing, interior floors, bathroom....... that City Code Book can lead to big ideas............. but still, Some People have Certain Ideas that chickens, in their minds, are filthy hillbilly fare.

Have you had any good responses for nay-sayers?

You could start with a very quizzical look and then ask "why"? Then proceed to shoot down every one of their objections with facts including how much your actual neighbors enjoy watching them and receiving fresh eggs. At least if that part's true and even if it's not, who cares?!

Now tell me how the chicken coop resulted in new interior floors because I desperatly need new flooring and must follow your plan. The new bathroom was last years project that isn't entirely done.

I agree with asking why, but also with adding, "What are your bad experiences with chickens?" The only people I have ever run into that made that comment were people who had never had any and had preconceived ideas about chickens. Or, they had gone to a commercial farm and came away with an idea of how all chicken owners have a gazillion chickens that stink.

We are the main attraction in our neighborhood- seriously, all the kids are over here watching the chickens several days a week! They also think it's funny, watching over the fence, to see us walking around holding chickens or seeing them perched on shoulders.

"Don't knock it until you try it."

"If I had wanted your opinion, I would have asked for it."

(this one works for a lot more than chickens, lolololol)

"Good thing you won't have to "put up with" my free eggs!"

Yes... "too bad, you'd miss out on all the free eggs, insect control and compost"

With the way grocery prices are rising, pretty soon these chickens will be cheaper to keep than buying eggs from the store! Yay!

And, the neighborhood kids LOVE THEM!

OMG!!!! Where did you find those. My cute boots from Target (that were only $10) leak really bad and I need a new pair....chicekn boots to take care of the chickens...I must have them!!!!

I love them both! I really need some boots like that.. Where did you get those?

This thread makes me feel SOOOO much better. When I call my parents now, my Dad answers the phone Hey Chicken Lady!! I figure it's only a matter of time before it becomes Crazy Chicken Lady....I am sure my hubby already thinks so...
I have been wanting some chickens since the end of last year...when I started getting eggs from my friend...well I started reading up on them. April I bought 12... then got 5 more a week later....then a cpl more here and there....I had 25. Before I bought those I ordered 25 from a hatchery, but they wouldn't be shipped until middle of May. SO they came and got 2 extra... so became 52.

Right around the time that those were coming, I sweet talked my hubby into letting me get an incubator... just wanted to see if I could hatch some, I told him. So had 12 eggs in the bator.....ended up with 7 out of that hatch.

SO I think that's 59.... but I am not counting....now I have 25 more in the bator.....but they are just eggs.

The sad part is, I know just how many I have of every kind I have....they do not have names........YET .... but if I end up with too many roosters, some might end up in the freezer, so I don't want to get super attached to all of em...but there a few that have quite a personality that will stay right where they are, even if they are not good egg producers...now they might get a name

I love them!!! They are hilarious!!! It's better than comedy on TV.

I'm not allowed to name ours for the same reason BUT I did name the 2 girls who are free range and not kept in a coop. They're names are Sassypants and Tattletale for very good reasons. I really love them as they follow me around and talk to me while I take care of everyone else. They go in my shed at night and are in a large dog cage. They really are pretty spoiled....
I'm banned from trying to hatch any so guess I'll just have to buy them...

As for neighbors, I'd tell them to go scratch......
