Crazy Emu Story

Interesting story! (breeding-pair six months together? adults? or two chicks you hope will become a pair?)

Emus love to wander. But they have a cycle of 'home turfs.' I wish some of you could stay here to do some field work. Mine come when called: that is, if they are within earshot, they'll mosey back to the house-clearing if called.

Here is Eric and the chicks trying their luck at the back door. You can see a fence, but these chicks are tame-wild:

Let me clarify. These are an unrelated male and female. We boight them as month old chicks for the intention of them becoming a breeding pair. They have been together on our farm since. Such interesting birds!! Ours will eat out of our hands, at times, but are still very hesitant of any contact. However, after there 3 day walk about they are very happy to be back with us and all of their friends. One of the first things Juliet did was "groom" one of her goat friends. They do that with tjr goats as well as Daemon our great pyrenees. Extremely fun to watch!

Congratulations on them returning home. I have never owned one but we had one from a neighbor come visit. I think it took them about 2 weeks to corner him and get him home. Our poor dog, who spotted the "biggest chicken" chicken she had ever seen was traumatized to see him in the front yard and now barks at anything bird....
