Before I start!

I want to apologize for terrible grammar I struggle with it so just bear with me

OK for a long time I’ve been looking for a new pet after the passing of my dog. (her name was diamond she was a rescue didn’t come from a bad home her owner just couldn’t keep her anymore.)

kinda like a switch my friend who really does love animals, but can be very careless sometimes bought a clutch of eggs quail eggs.

She had no idea what to do with them and she asked me to take them not wanting to leave some baby chicks helpless I said yes.

I’ve done my research on quail and I thought I was ready! Boy did it go a bit wild.

I finally decided on an incubator something not too pricey but something that has good hatch rates.

Everything was going perfectly for the first two days (honestly I blame myself for not doing more research on the incubators)

The temperature was at a very good High

99°F Which seemed fine to me I looked it up to make sure everything was all right and no one really had an answer but most of them were around the 90/99 range so I didn’t panic.

On the third day I noticed a drop in the temperature which again I wasn’t worried about because I heard the temperature would fluctuate sometimes so I left it alone.

Late at night I went to check on them again and the temperature was extremely!!! I did everything to try and raise it again but nothing was working!!

The incubator had broken! I was trying to stay calm as I thought of a different way to do things then bam!

I have a old dresser I never use so I tossed everything out of it quickly (cleaned it up after)

Grabbed some towels and aspen bedding and made a nest in the dresser drawer!

The next thing to do was get heating ready,

I got a heat lamp (I have a few laying around because I own reptiles lmao) and grabbed a lightbulb I did try a heating bulb but the thing got to hot so I went with a regular one that worked perfectly.

My eggs are now back in a good temperature and are sitting pretty I also ripped a computer fan out of my old pc I don’t use anymore hot wired it to blow inside the dresser, (I also ordered a usb one just in case the one I hot wired stopped working.

If you guys have any other tips or tricks I would love to hear them just hope I worked fast enough to save them! Cheers !!!! Thank you for listening or reading my scrambled story

Sounds like that kind of setup is likely to have a very low humidity. Do you measure it? I'd try to find a way to get moisture in the air without getting the eggs wet.
It'll be interesting to see if anything hatches...

I’ve heard lots of stories about successful dry incubation!

But other than that the humidity seems to be fine 60/70% all I do is wet a Towel and place it next to the eggs

I think I have humidity down good

Since I have a reptile that needs high humidity I’m always watching stuff like that making sure it’s right

I love your ingenuity. Good work! My only suggestions would be to make sure there is no fire hazard with the light in a wooden dresser, I can't see how you have it set up. If you have any extra tanks that might work as well to hold eggs and heat. Will it be safe for the chicks in the drawer if you don't notice right away that they hatched. What day are you on now? I wonder if you can candle quail eggs or if the spots get in the way.
Start setting up your brooder now and their permanent housing. Quail hatch in 18 days I think and grow so fast they will be jumping out of that drawer before you know it.
Source out appropriate food for them now, sometimes it is hard to find specialty food for birds that aren't chickens.

Good luck!

Yes! The first thing I did was made sure no fires could happen

I used a wire mesh I use for my reptile heating and put the lamp on top of it

I also put another small fan in there to cool it and keep temperatures more stable

I’ve checked and made sure they couldn’t get out of the drawer but also making sure there was air flow

They are on day 5! I did candle them (with my phone) and from what I see they are growing I haven’t seen any quitter yet

I’ve already got there brooder ready and made and I’ve got their food ready!

24% protein I couldn’t find anything higher (it’s gamebird feed) thank you for the tips!
