As some of you know last sept I bought 6 hens at an auction house in Waynesville, NC. Well I got home and one was sneezing. I was very new at this so I did not isolate it from the others that I bought that day. Two days later I realized I had a big problem. I culled mercilessly. It broke my heart. I then was left with two beautiful brahma hens. Its been almost two months and yesterday evening I went to tuck the girls in and one was sneezing and rattling in her chest. I could have cried. My only hens.
So today I took many peoples advice on forum from what I have learned and called the agr. poultry people. We are a big producer of poutry in NC. So these people take it serious. He listened and ask questions and said he thought I might have a big problem. He is to call me back. He told me the routine for birds with disease. The gist of which is they may take all my birds if they are diseased even the little ones in my house that are not sick. Sad!!!!!! I don't want to lose my little ones esp. But if it is bad I know that is best.
I may have to start over next spring. Has anyone else gone through this. Jean

Oh! I really hate to hear this. I went through quite a time with my chicks and chickens this past summer, due to me being new and not quarantining a new chick also. I had Coryza run through my flock and spent my whole summer caring for them and culling. I really hope that you don't end up loosing your whole flock. I plan to hatch chicks in the spring and if worse comes to worse, I would be more than happy to help you establish a flock again. Let's hope that the worst doesn't happen though.

Oh Jean, I am so incredibly sorry to hear this!

The recent pics of your chicks were so precious. I was reading the Iwanna paper just last night & saw an ad re the auction place in W'ville. I've always wondered if I should go, but I am certainly scared to go there now. I sure hope u send the Ag guys to the auction house in W'ville so they can ck things out. I've not been thru this before, but all I can say is that I am deeply sorry for your loss. :aww

Please don't go to that auction. I met another chicken owner that has lost most of his flock from getting some hens there this fall. He has lost 75.
The agr. man called me back it would be at least 3 weeks before they would be in this area. He told me the safest thing to do is get rid of the two hens. Take the one that is sneezing to Arden, NC next to Fletcher. They do necropses there. It will be next week before I can do this. I think I should. At least then I will have a clean coop to start my new chicks. They have not been in contact with the others. Also I have used extra precautions to prevent any spread or dirt or anything happening to them. I hate to lose my only two hens but there seems no other way. Maybe if I have the others sacrificed it will save the others.
I will have to really disinfect the coop. I have tried to find oxine but no one around here carries it. I did find another product. It is used in barns around poultry and animals and appears to kill everything viral and bacterial. I will let you know more about this next week. I will be meeting my Son whom I have not seen in 3 years and nothing is going to get in the way of that.Jean

Thank you for giving me your advice in letting me know that I should not go there - I definitely won't go. By all means, surround yourself w/ the love of your son to get u thru this!

I've always been so worried about auctions in that I think a lot of people take their chicks there knowing that they are sick and are just looking for a quick buck.

I have 2 silkies that maybe could hatch some chicks for you in the spring.

I could give them some Delaware eggs to hatch, but the daddy wld either be a Buff Orpington or an American Game. I don't have any Dellie boys. Of course, if you'd rather have Buff Orp chicks, I could arrange that too. I don't have a bator for good reason...it's addicting, once I'd start I know I'd never be able to stop hatching - that's why I got the silkies. Just let me know. Of course, the first thing I need is to convince my hens to lay their first egg!!!

It should be any time now though. If you're interested, please email me & I'll forward you some pics of my flock (I need to take updated pics) that I took in August.

Thanks for all the info Jean. Do you have an idea if it's coming from the actual auction house itself, or is it coming through there with the birds from someone who shouldn't be selling?

I will be sure not to get anything from there as well.

Jean, I was gone or in bed most of the day, but I did answer your PM. I'd just listen to the ag guy. They are more aware of what is going around your area than I am, so you'll get good advice from them, I think.
