Cream Legbar Working Group: Standard of Perfection

Truth will set you free.... I'm not a breeder just love my chickens he's my first cream legbar rooster was wondering about his color
Ok the base color on his saddle and hackles is ok but seems a tad light. The major problem is the lack of barring on them. Also the fluff is completely without barring.

I would not breed him. As there are other problems, tail set, back length and the way he holds himself. His ear lobes have too much red. His tail has great barring.

hi everyone I am new to his thread. I have a male and female CLB. My rooster is new (hatched him last spring). He is a small guy, is crested, and has a terrible comb. My first cream leg bar was big and gorgeous with an enormous comb (no crest)- a beautiful bird but he was an A$$ and I rehomed him to a man who didn't have kids and he said he would be just fine with such an aggressive rooster. (would run at me and my kids feet up and ready to kill- all the time!!)

The new floppy combed rooster was bought as one of 3 hatching eggs (that's all I could find in my area!!) and the 2 that hatched were both roosters, so I picked one chick and gave one to a friend. They both have the same silly comb, and are on the small side.

Anyways, my hen, Lovely- is the daughter of my old CLB rooster. (so she is non crested)
She is 2.5 now. She is a lovely hen who lays well. Her eggs are very pale blue, and I would like to make them more blue... I am hoping to breed her to my silly floppy combed CCLB this spring. (hard to find CLB around here).

My questions are - 1. will all offspring inherit the crest? 2. will male offspring inherit Lovely's genes (and look like her gorgeous dad) or more likely to inherit genes from their own dad (my floppy combed small rooster?). and #3. how old does a rooster need to be to decide who to keep as your breeder. Can you tell by 16 weeks?

thanks

One of the multitude of challenges in breeding legbars is balancing the comb and crest. The proposed standards call for a large comb and a crest.

No comb is a disqualification.

It can be done, I have several with good combs and a crest. The crests are not large, but they are there.

You will most likely need to find birds from another source to accomplish this.

I can’t tell by 16 weeks who is a breeder, I can tell who isn’t though.

gotcha!! good point!

I dont want to show my birds, just dont want ugly mutts. LOL. so ...if there a chance that males inherit their mom's genetics for the comb?
Yes, I've had luck in that regard. I've gotten more successful over time in getting straighter combs and bigger crests together balanced on the head, but I've been at it seven years... some of the best hens I've bred for getting there were a few very straight combed ladies with minimal crests ( they had crests just real small) and breeding to the straightest combed cock. Bred back to bigger combed girl from straight combed boy. Kept nudging generation after generation, and now I've got a family of Fabio cockerels this year, both straight combs and flowing locks. I really should get a picture of them this year!

I just found this thread. I'm interested in honest opinions about how close my Cream Legbars are to standard. I got 7 straight run from Cackle. 4 pullets & 3 cockerels. I kept IMO the best rooster.

Please let me know your thoughts. You won't hurt my feelings...

I can take some photos of the girls in the next few days. I kept 2 of the 4 pullets.

Gimmie a side view so I can judge back length and tail angle better, please, otherwise I can tell you his barring is rather rough and he's got too much white on his tail. His comb is not flopped so that's great. He looks like he could fill out more, so I would like a picture of him in a few months so we can see him more filled out, we want a wedge shaped boy. He's keeping his wings tucked up, so that's another plus. Am I seeing a wrinkled wattle? That's not a deal breaker but it's something to work on later.

Is there a crest?
