Cream Legbars

thats a girl....................
Thanks :) I was sure and then started second guessing myself because of the light spot in the middle of the V, LOL! And pretty sure she's already getting a crest - which is nice as only 2 others of mine have crests so far. I have been told that even if I breed only crested gals I will still get only 50% crested at best. I have yet to see any crested roos from any that I've gotten. Are there crested roos? Is that what is needed - both parents crested - in order to get all crested. Or does that just not happen?

Thanks

Sexing CL should not be hard at all... and yes some Hens get the headspot, but its not very large an the headstrip is well defined

Thanks

I can't seem to get any crested roos either. They all seem to be pullets.

50% doesn't sound right to me if you are breeding from crested girls. Cresting is, to my understanding, incompletely dominant. I do agree you see roos with cresting less often BUT when they get a crest it really messes with their comb- it is SUCH a balancing act! My guy has a very small crest but a nice erect comb, only 5 points though.

My understanding is sometimes they grow out of the wry tail- it can just be a mis-balance caused by uneven growth/feathering. I would keep them if you have room until they are about 8-10 months old!

All of my boys are crested. But, I did have one little girl come out non-crested from crested parents, so I determined they were both carriers for non-crests. I think that lack of cresting is just another thing in the long list of DQable and non-desireable traits that we will need to breed out over the next few years.

I paired a non-crested hen with a small crested cockerel. About 50% of their offpsring were crested. Most were small crested, but I have one with a medium crest and good type that is now 13 months old that I am currently collecting eggs from.

So...the original cockerel that the non-cressted pullet was paired to only had one cresting gene. To carry this breeding line forward I have mated the 13 month old hen with the guy below (don't pay any attention to his color. I am focusing on big crests and straight combs with this pairing).

Oh... I also pair a medium crested hen to the same small crested cockerel as the non-crested hen was paired with. 100% of her offspring were crested.
