Cream Legbars

Most of the time I am happy if I get 40-50% hatch rate on shipped eggs.......I do provide feedback as well

On one set of Spitzhauben eggs....5 hatched out of 12 eggs, grew them out to two months and none developed crests but they got MUFFS...I sent pix and she asked if I mixed up other eggs but the only other eggs I had were BCM Marans and they were in different incubator....after going back and forth, it turns out her Amercauna roo was with the Spitz hens about 3 weeks prior.....finally she is going to make good and send replacements.

so I have gotten dozens of eggs and am very happy......once in a while you get a bad seller but do your homework...and then you get a bad buyer...it sure would be to note those!

Thanks. You just helped me clear up a mystery as to why one of my Marsh Daisy pullets has slate legs. Sorry about talking about my Marsh Daisy. Let's get back to Cream Legbars. :)
Is their a Marsh Daisy thread? After reading through the 101 chicken breeds guide that my wife got me 2 years ago I wanted to start a new project. All the original crosses used in the Marsh Daisy were pretty well establish and the guide to the breed made it sound like the Marsh Daisy was extinct or was going that way (heart problems in males at 2 years old, and other inbreeding problems were indicated) so I didn't think there was any chance of it ever coming to the USA. As I was getting ready to purchase the required foundation birds to get started last spring I decided I better do some more checking and discovered that it wasn't extinct yet, and that is was already in the US. So I abandoned the idea of recreating a breed but want to see the US Marsh Daisy and how they are progressing.

Anyone watching the bidding for two pairs of Rees cream legbar chicks on Rare Breed Auctions? It went crazy very fast!

I had bid $210 on them to a point and then tilled my garden and had dinner. Now at 11:21 EDT it is up to $974! It is very nice that the proceeds will go to the Cream Legbar Club. But WOW!

Always interesting watching human behavior.

It is interesting! That is amazing I never would have known. I'm surprised its been bid up so high. Especially since the price of this line can only go down from here right? Usually pretty rapidly?

Well honestly I'm just glad people are going to buy them and breed them. I can't wait to see more out there.

I need a scratch head smiley. What am I missing here? They are only $149 per chick, right? So two pairs would be $596...

I want the Rees line but I don't want to pay $149 a chick for them.

I think the real hype with the auction is that GFF already has a wait list a mile long for the Rees line.... so if you aren't already on the list this is your only chance to get them THIS YEAR!!! That's a lucky bid I suppose!

Never saw any willow legs on my Basques only white before I selected away from it.

As for outrageous bidding on the earliest release that's easy. The first people to have eggs or chicks available outside of GFF can cash in on the higher prices. Supply and demand. After all the $$$ I've already sunk into this breed with so little "show quality" type to show for it yet l'm not in a hurry to chase the Rees line. Working forward with what I've got already in hopes that I'll have something good soon.

I don't think anyone will be able to cash in on selling Cream Legbars except for GFF. The problem is that their are lots of Cream Legbars out there right now. I have already had customers that placed orders over the winter come back and negotiate a lower price. And they have not ever heard of Jill Rees or GFF. It's like the people rushing out to buy Ayam Cemani right now. They wrongfully think they will make money. I've had mine since last September and I feel I was the last one to the party. I can't imagine anyone just starting out. I have like 40 Ayam Cemani chicks in the brooder right now with another 30 or so eggs hatching in two weeks. By June, I will have over a hundred Ayam Cemani in my flock. But my flock still would be considered small and not ready for sale. Breeding takes time, brooder, coops, and lots of careful selection.

What I am getting at is that if people are bidding on these because they think they will make money, then good luck to them. But those of us that have more experience breeding know that it is very expensive and quite an undertaking. By the time these are old enough to produce chicks, GFF will be selling them in batches at auction. Why wouldn't they? So your price is going to be not much more than EVERY other Cream Legbar breeder. Sure the Jill Rees birds are beautiful. But we know this because we obsess about them. The average customer is just going to either buy hatchery Cream Legbars from Meyers or look on Craigslist and then argue you down until you give in on price.

Sorry for the long rant. I am just amazed that people see chickens as a get rich quick scheme. If you want to make piles of money, sell real estate in one of the top 5 cities in the country. Breed chickens because you love the breed and want to improve them.

Haven't caught up on all the reading, but I'm working on it!
I'm expecting my first Crested Cream Legbars at the end of the month!
Also my first non-hatchery birds!
They'll be hatching along with some Marans at the breeder's.
